Job Summary:
The Scientific Officer conducts surveillance and outbreak investigations, designs and supervises experiments, and leads projects related to public health. They will develop new diagnostic methods, analyze data, supervise staff, and write reports and publications. The role involves both management and lab work, including collaboration with internal and external teams.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific:
- Develops and maintains lab tests for surveillance and outbreak investigations.
- Compiles and submits surveillance reports.
- Supervises medical technologists and graduate students, addressing technical issues and ensuring quality control.
- Develops and optimizes new assays and methods.
- Assists in coordinating outbreak investigations with the Deputy/HOD and MOH.
- Validates test results and ensures quality control procedures.
- Updates manuals and protocols to maintain service quality.
- Assists with department inspections and biosafety management.
- Conducts risk assessments for lab procedures and ensures safety compliance.
- Supports grant applications and collaborates with local and international labs.
- Provides expert input on diagnostic methods and new technologies.
General:
- Complies with safety, ethical, and infection control standards.
- Participates in team meetings and laboratory operations.
- Assists in ordering lab supplies and equipment.
- Works overtime or on weekends as needed.
- Performs other tasks as directed by supervisors.
Job Requirements:
- Ph.D. in Microbiology, Life Sciences, Molecular Biology, or related field (preferred).
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Molecular Biology, Clinical Diagnosis, or Infectious Disease.
- Ability to lead research projects and work in a team.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
