Overview
A Medical Technologist carries out intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring procedures; monitors neurological function of patients during spine instrumentation procedures and assists the neurophysiologist in specialized procedures in accordance with the established standards of care and practice.
Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%)
- To expertise in Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM).
- To establish knowledge and understanding in anatomy and nervous system in human.
- To fit intraoperative monitoring into the operating room.
- To perform IONM procedures setting according to every single operation.
- To set up IONM consumables for op-patients before sterile.
- To perform the baseline of EPs before major instrumentation surgery stage.
- To report baseline parameter of IONM to the surgeon and to analyze the neurological deficits of patient’s pre-op status.
- To assist surgeons in:
- Scoliosis
- Cervical-spine Operation
- Thoracic-spine Operation
- Lumbar-spine Operation
- TB spine Operation
- Tumor spine Operation
- Trauma spine Operation
- Fracture spine Operation
- Tethered Cord Release
- To monitor patient’s neurology function parameters during operation.
- To assist in interpretation of recorded evoked potentials during operation.
- To inform surgeons of changes of criteria of IONM during operation in time.
- To assist the surgeon access causes of the change of IONM if requested.
- To assist in reducing the substantive alteration of rule out of warning events in IONM.
- To demonstrate clinical skills and knowledge in the delivery of patient care.
- To display compassion, positive and caring attitude towards patients, internal and external clients.
- To demonstrate proper use and care of equipment.
- To demonstrate proper and economical usage of consumables and supplies.
- To maintain a clean and safe working environment.
Secondary Responsibilities and Duties (20%)
- To report cases which meet warning criteria to Senior Medical Technologists and prepare formal case report in time.
- To conduct self-audit and update the required statistical report on IONM service.
- To update and order departmental stock items and inventory.
- To attend in-service lectures, courses and seminars.
- To assume additional responsibilities assigned by Senior Medical Technologist and Operation Theatre Managers.
- To adhere to hospital’s policies and procedures.
- To conduct research related to IONM.
Requirements:
Qualification:
- Degree in Medicine/ Life Science with neurophysiology relevant course attendance or Diploma in Life Science/Biotechnology with neurophysiology relevant course attendance
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience preferred for Degree level; minimum 4 years of relevant experience for Diploma level.
Skills:
- Possession of a working knowledge of Singapore Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and International Conference on Harmonization GCP guidelines.
- Able to work independently and meticulously.
- Good listening and communication skills.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills.
