The EW Barker Centre for Law & Business (EWBCLB) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, was launched on 29 May 2017 at the NUS Bukit Timah Campus by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. It seeks to enhance and promote research and educational opportunities for faculty, students, legal practitioners and business executives who share a common interest in the fields of Law, Business and Economics. These opportunities will be encouraged through the Centre's work and sponsorship of seminars, conferences and research endeavours. The EW Barker Centre for Law & Business will also engage in appropriate research projects commissioned by industry from time to time. Its vision is to be the leading law centre in Asia in the field of Law and Business, and one of the leading research institutions in this field globally. EWBCLB’s continuing achievements include a highly-regarded Working Paper Series (WPS), available at https://law.nus.edu.sg/ewbclb/publications/.

The Director of EWBCLB is Professor Tjio Hans, CJ Koh Professor, and the Deputy Director is Associate Professor Wee Meng Seng.

EWBCLB is inviting applications from suitable candidates in the field of Law, Business and Economics. The appointed candidate will carry out research in the areas of Law, Business and Economics and play an active role in the centre’s intellectual life.

  1. A remuneration package, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  2. Eligibility to apply for research and conference funding from EWBCLB to support attendance at academic conferences and to conduct field research, where required.
  3. Allocation of designated workspace within EWBCLB.

Duties

The duties associated with the position are as follows:

  1. The successful applicant will be expected to be in residence throughout the term of his/her appointment, subject to the standard NUS terms as to annual leave.
  2. The successful applicant will be expected to develop his/her own research agenda, including undertaking research projects in the areas of Law, Business and Economics, leading to publications during his/her term of appointment. Such research may include, but is not limited to, authoring articles for publication in refereed journals, authoring book chapters in edited collections, and writing research papers.
  3. The successful candidate will be expected to assist in EWBCLB’s research projects and initiatives, as assigned by the Director and Deputy Director of EWBCLB.
  4. The successful candidate will also be required to present his/her research and to participate in and contribute to EWBCLB seminars.

Requirements

The selection committee will consider the following criteria in making an appointment for the position of Postdoctoral Fellow in EWBCLB:

  1. An applicant who has attained a doctoral degree in law and particularly sought within the fields of Intellectual Property, Insolvency, Corporations, Competition, Tax, Private Law, and Arbitration.
  2. The candidate will be of exceptional calibre.
  3. The principal selection criterion will be the applicant’s potential for excellence in research and a demonstrated ability and passion in assisting in the ongoing development of EWBCLB.
  4. The applicant should be exceptionally organized and have an eye for detail. A strong command of the English language is absolutely essential.

  2. Curriculum Vitae A detailed curriculum vita should be submitted containing complete and detailed information on academic institutions, honours, awards, all publications to date, and all professional experience (current and previous, including dates of employment and job descriptions).
  3. Research Proposal A one- page description of intended research project should also be submitted in the application.
  4. Closing Date The closing date for the receipt of applications and references is 21 January 2025. Late applications cannot be considered.
