Project Title: Mindful High Intensity Interval Training Sessions

Project Introduction:

We are seeking an energetic research assistant interested in physical education, exercise, and mindfulness to join Mindful-HIITS, a research project exploring the impact of a school-based intervention on adolescent regulation and wellbeing.

Exercise and mindfulness training are both valuable interventions that can enhance cognitive function, emotion regulation, and well-being. Their low-cost, modifiable, and scalable nature, offer economical practices that can be adopted by schools to potentially enhance student learning. Some teachers in Singapore already utilize exercise or mindfulness with students in efforts to enhance learning and well-being; however, it is unclear how widely these practices are used, or if they are implemented effectively in local schools. Moreover, while there is ample evidence supporting the broad benefits of exercise and mindfulness separately, there is a dearth of research examining their combined effects on emotion regulation and wellbeing.

This research project aims to develop and test a school-based intervention to improve adolescents’ cognitive and affective functioning through a combination of exercise (high intensity interval training [HIIT]) and mindfulness practice that is tailored for secondary school students over several PE lessons. Acute and longer-term effects of the combined mindfulness and HIIT sessions (Mindful HIITS) on emotion regulation, wellbeing, and learning, will be studied using multimodal approaches involving self-report, neuroimaging (EEG), and physiological data collection in school environments. The successful applicant will help drive all aspects of the project and can receive training in mindfulness-based stress reduction practices alongside a wide range of research skills in order to collect, analyze, and interpret multimodal data related to mindfulness, physical exercise, and learning in adolescents.

Essential Requirements:

• Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Physical Education and Sports Science, or related fields.

A Senior Research Fellow position is available in the laboratory of Assistant Professor Kazuyuki Kasahara at the Novena campus of the LKCMedicine. Gut microbiota influences many areas of human health from immunity to energy metabolism and host physiology. The goal of our research group is to understand how bacterial metabolism, diet-microbe, and microbe-microbe interactions influence cardiometabolic disease using experimental approaches. The RF/SRF will lead a project, recently funded by MOE, that explores the protective mechanisms of butyrate-producing bacteria against atherosclerosis. Centre for Lifelong Learning and Individualised Cognition CLIC is a research collaboration between the University of Cambridge and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and hosted by the Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education in Singapore (CARES) that aims to develop neuroscience-based interventions for lifelong flexible learning. Research project: Connecting within-host viral dynamics with the epidemiology of COVID-19: a multiscale computational infrastructure

In this project, we aim to develop a multiscale modeling framework and computational infrastructure to connect within-host viral dynamics/antibody dynamics and between-host transmission dynamics. The multiscale model will help address key epidemiological and public health questions which could not be answered by classic (single scale) approaches. Specifically, we plan to develop and calibrate the multiscale model for SARS-CoV-2 and assess effect of intervention (e.g., antiviral treatment) on epidemiological dynamics.

This project is led by Keisuke Ejima, an Assistant Professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University.

The Research Fellow primarily leads the project under supervision of PI in the areas of collecting clean data, reviewing literatures, lead model development, lead data analyses, leading the manuscript writing and other areas of the project support.

Candidates should have a Master degree in a quantitative field, such as data science, computational biology, mathematics, computer science, (bio)statistics, or related field. Research experience and/or educational background on public health and medicine is a plus but not essential. Computational experience on R and MONOLIX is preferred. Good communication skill and respectful attitude for teamwork. The successful applicant will work as part of a growing and energetic team, focusing on quantitatively understanding biological mechanisms of infection and its impact on both individual and population health.
