The School of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) invites applications for the position of Research Fellow.
Applicants should have a strong record of topics related to ferrofluids, magnetic fluids, and/or non-aqueous nanoparticle chemistry with related experience in colloidal stability, thermoset/thermoplastic resins, liquid adhesives, and/or resin formulation development.
Other desirable qualifications include industrial background in ferrofluids, metal oxide additives, paints/coatings, and/or liquid resin development. We look for applicants who are highly motivated and can demonstrate initiative and lead a technical team. Applicants should submit a 1-page cover letter that briefly summarizes your professional background and competency of key responsibilities and qualification requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research and design ferrofluids and magnetic fluids with liquid polymer resins.
- Identify and select monomers for use in thermoset and thermoplastic composites.
- Formulate and measure colloidal stability of resin based ferrofluids and magnetic fluids.
- Assess viscosity and rheological properties of polymerization resins.
- Manage and deliver project KPIs and objectives per grant management.
- Ensure milestone delivery per plan/schedule, manage/control project risks & mitigating actions
- Prepare/consolidate periodic reports (finance, technical) as required.
- Manage project documentation, knowledge/data capture and reporting.
- Manage logistical issues and laboratory inventory.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety in all aspects of the research work.
Job Requirements:
- Master’s/PhD (preferred) in chemistry, materials science, or related engineering field from reputable university.
- Strong record of scientific/industrial impact within a ferrofluids, liquid materials, metal oxides, or related engineering sector.
- Industrial or academic experience related to ferrofluid or magnetic fluid optimization, development, and or scale-up.
- Written evidence of technical skills related to resin formulation development, colloidal stability, dynamic light scattering, rheology, ferrofluid/magnetic fluid design is an advantage.
- Polymer chemistry background related to thermoset/thermoplastic resins is highly desired.
- Evidence of written and oral research outputs, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Minimum of 2 years of academic/industrial experience.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team with strong initiatives.
