The primary purpose of the Development Process Engineer is to lead a focused team in supporting the product development process, ensuring robust product design and manufacturability in both low and high volumes. This involves working closely with product and SI engineers, tooling PE’s, and plant ME functions to identify design limitations, suggest improvements, and execute manufacturing strategies to meet customer expectations.
Our Team
This role is part of the DSS division and reports to the Manager/Supervisor of Development Process Engineering (DPE). The team is global, working cross-functionally with product, marketing management, finance, and senior management to drive the tooling development process and ensure successful project completion from concept through to high-volume production.
What You Will Do
- Knowledge of connector/cable manufacturing processes; molding, stamping, plating and assembly and lead a focused team consisting of product and SI engineers, all tooling PE’s and plants ME function to support product development process ensuring robust product design and manufacturability in low and high volumes.
- Identify limitations in proposed product designs and suggest improvements to meet Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and inspection guidelines. Provide critical feedback on process dimensions and product features.
- Identify and lead any proof-of-concept work required in early design stage to verify use of new technology or concepts in product or process design to reduce risk and improve profitability.
- Develop manufacturing strategies for new products and drive the tooling development process to meet customer’s expectations of quality and optimal cost and lead-time. This involves working with product, marketing management, finance and senior management on analysis of multiple scenarios using global cost analysis to arrive at optimal solution.
- Execute manufacturing strategies to support all phases of product development process (prototype thru high volume production). Work with Stamping Die, Mold and Automation PE’s in selecting and managing internal and external suppliers to ensure successful project completion through concept, design, build, debug and qualification.
- Working with respective tooling PEs to ensure successful transfer of all tooling processes and equipment to NPI and manufacturing plants. Work with NPI / plant MEs as needed to debug new products and processes to validate product performance and meet customer needs – delivery, quality and performance.
- Support production plant MEs in ramp up of new products as well as required capacity additions.
- Detailed understanding of automation - concepts, parts transfer devices, machine controls and inspection techniques. This requires technical and analytical skills and hasAbility to develop specifications on automated process and equipment.
Ability to debug and qualify high-speed assembly equipment, as well as manual processes and tooling. This requires problem solving and organizational skills including root cause analysis.
Knowledge of mechanism design coupled with strong math and mechanism analysis skills.
Ability to research, develop and implement new technology and manufacturing techniques.
- Support plant GLSS projects to improve cost and quality. Utilize concepts and methods to optimize manufacturing processes and daily activities.
- Successfully complete all required DPE PDP (Product Development Process) elements for each assigned project.
- Understand, support and contribute to current Molex Total Quality Management (TQM), Six Sigma, International Standards Organization (ISO) and Environmental, and/or Health and Safety (EH&S) management Systems by following stated policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering related to precision electromechanical components.
- Experience with synchronous, asynchronous, flexible (robotics), and manual assembly systems.
- 3-5 years of project management experience.
- Working knowledge of SPC and DOE.
- Ability to maintain trust and confidentiality, job requires handling very confidential and new product and financial information.
- Good organizational skills to handle lots of complex technical data and manage multiple competing project priorities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate the ability to express complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to all levels of managers and technical people within Molex and with outside suppliers.
- General understanding of basic accounting for forecasting, estimating, budget preparation and business investment justification for preparing quotes and applied cost analysis.
What Will Put You Ahead
- Master’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering.
- 5 years of experience in connector manufacturing processes.
- 5 years of hands-on experience in the design, build, and debug of assembly equipment.
- Strong knowledge of GLSS principles.
- Familiarity with 3-D CAD, Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and flow charting software like Visio.
- Knowledge of accounting and business management principles.
