The Earth Observatory of Singapore was founded with a mission to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies: https://earthobservatory.sg/

The Asian School of the Environment is an interdisciplinary school that integrates earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to addressing key environmental challenges related to climate change, geohazards, sustainablity and global environmental change, with a focus on Southeast Asia: https://www.ntu.edu.sg/ase.

The successful candidate will join a team at the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) and Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University who are working towards developing automated capabilities for remote-sensing based monitoring of natural hazards and mapping of natural disasters across Southeast Asia. The project aims to map floods, land subsidence, volcano monitoring, tectonic deformation, coastal change and earthquake studies, and to provide timely information to regional decision makers and disaster responders across the region.

Key Responsibilities:

• Works as a software engineer on the project
• Help with software development of new features and mission control of a near-real-time, partially automated system that will use remote sensing data for monitoring of hazards and mapping of disasters
• Development of additional features in our web-based interface according to user requirements
• Coordination with scientists at the Earth Observatory of Singapore to integrate post-processing algorithms for SAR data into the disaster response system
• Troubleshoot issues raised and develop fixes to ensure our system is always ready for response

Job Requirements:

• Master’s degree in computer science, remote sensing, data analytics, earth science, or natural hazards
• Strong experience with Python is a requirement. Experience working with cloud-computing platforms and distributed systems, and/or in using remote sensing to map natural hazards and disasters is advantageous
• Willingness to learn tools associated with cloud-based distributed systems, web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Docker, Elasticsearch)
• Willingness to learn scientific processing software and tools.
• Strong English and communication skills, both written and oral as medium of communication within the institute and for ease of communication with international collaborators
• Strong program management skills (project workflow planning, trouble shooting, etc.)

Job Description

What you will do:

• Support and complement the engineering team and sales team in the process design related to refrigeration systems and gas compression systems inclusive of compressor selections with Frick Screw compressors, York multi-wheel centrifugal compressors, and other compressors or chillers for the projects. This includes vessel and heat exchanger design using HYSYS and HTRI software and optimal to have AutoCad 2D experience for P&IDs and PFDs.
• Assume responsibility in providing engineering support for the design of refrigeration systems and gas compression systems for sales and projects, attend HAZOP meetings, and assist the sale and project teams at customer meetings.

How you will do it:

• Design refrigeration systems for various applications and perform a heat balance.
• Prepare P&ID diagrams, equipment layout/piping layout for refrigeration system.
• Size refrigeration equipment such as pressure vessel, heat exchangers, valve and controls
• Able to read and understand project/technical specification and comply to require specification.
• Specify temperature, pressure and differential transmitters, and flow meters along with the instrument engineer.
• Design refrigeration system for cold rooms/chilled water system/glycol system
• Work with different vendors on the selection of third-party equipment
• Able to hold technical discussions with vendors, sub-contractors and customers.
• Frequent site visits to ensure the refrigeration systems are integrated and installed in accordance to original design and provide effective solution for any impromptu design changes.
• Meet or improve the committed submission schedule of engineering documents, and complete assigned tasks within the time frame given, with minimal supervision.

What we look for:

• Diploma / Degree in Chemical Engineering, or equivalent.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD is a must.
• Familiarity with international engineering codes such as ASHAERE/API/ IIAR/ ASME etc
• Minimum 5 years relevant experience, preferably in refrigeration, chemical process, oil and gas (onshore and offshore), food and beverage, or similar industry.
• Experience in engineering software - HYSYS/ HTRI is a plus.
• Knowledge in API is a plus.
• Experience in working with site contractors and vendors on the successful implementation of the refrigeration system design at site.
• Team player, effective communicator, able to build customer relationship and customer satisfaction.
• Able to work independently and have a strong sense of responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Implementation of corporate Software SQMS (Site Quality Management System).
• Control and follow up all the QC Inspections and tests through SQMS.
• Preparation and management of all disciplines’ Test Folders.
• Site Expertise managing teams of work (including that of Subcontractors) in executing the tasks.

Requirements

Responsibilities

• Familiar with preparation of overall layout drawing and P&IDs for various systems, related to Combined Cycle power plants
• Lead a team of engineers during bid preparation and effectively execute the tendering works
• Guide the Engineering Team through the execution phase and monitor the engineering and procurement progress
• Able to perform and review sizing calculations for various equipment (like pump / fan sizing, heat exchanger sizing, etc)
• Prepare technical evaluation of vendor offers, approve vendor drawing and coordinate with vendor during post-order stage
• Coordinate with other disciplines of engineering and site during detailed engineering stage and commissioning
• Any other duties to be assigned from time to time

Pre-requisites:

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
• Minimum 8 years’ relevant experience in EPC power plant projects
• Conversant with overall cycle analysis and heat balance drawings
• Familiar with International Codes and practices
• Familiar with cycle analysis programs like GT Pro / GT Master will be an added advantage
• Able to interact effectively with Owner and Owner’s Engineers on technical issues
• Prior experience in leading a team of design engineers is an added advantage
