The Legal Director, ASEAN is responsible for managing all legal affairs within the ASEAN region, comprising Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and IndoChina, Indonesia and Philippines, and related factories. This includes providing strategic business-partnership to senior leaders within ASEAN on legal risks and opportunities, including strategic projects such as expansion and advice generally on the highly-regulated medicine/medical-devices space (such as OTC medicines and intimate-wellness medical devices) and corresponding regulated sales channels (such as pharmacy), and managing a team of lawyers across markets under ASEAN.
Responsibilities:
- Provide overall function leadership and strategic business-partnership to senior leaders within the Region/Countries on legal risks and opportunities.
- Represent Legal in ASEAN leadership team
- Support, develop, and mentor a team of lawyers to ensure an outperformance mindset and best-in-class business-partnering in markets.
- Manage litigation and disputes, and associated risks.
- Provide advice and guidance on reputational, governance, and compliance-related issues.
- Oversee drafting & reviewing contracts, including support to the sales to the specialist and regulated pharmaceutical/pharmacy retail-channel, managing cases related to employment laws, data privacy, conducting due diligence.
- Ensure that all category-specific particularities are correctly managed, in particularly those related to consumer health, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Distribution Practice (GDP) licensing, medical safety and quality, healthcare compliance, medical advertising and marketing, medical detailing, interactions with healthcare professionals (HCPs), and all other regulations applicable to medicines and medical devices or other laws and regulations in relation to the compliant advertising and sale of medical products and devices.
- Partner closely with colleagues across the Legal and Compliance function to ensure a seamless and joined-up approach to legal risk-management and business-enablement, including Ethics and Compliance, Litigations & Investigations, Corporate Legal, M&A & Governance, Privacy, Patent, and Brand Protection.
- Partner closely with external affairs and other function to advocate and explore opportunities on legal, regulatory and policy reform;
- Manage the overall ASEAN legal budget and spend; and
- Other tasks and projects as assigned.
Requirements:
- Minimum 10 years PQE with law degree and license to practice.
- Fluent written and spoken English (any ASEAN language proficiency a non-essential “plus”).
- Experience and familiarity with matrixed MNC Management structures (if in-house background, must have been with MNC, if law firm background, must have directly and frequently interacted with and preferably integrated with Management in MNCs as clients).
- Interest in and some experience of being team leader and developer of people.
