The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University is an interdisciplinary School that aims to be a world leader in environmental research focusing on environmental challenges in Asia. ASE integrates earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to address key issues of the environment and sustainability.

The research laboratory on Resilient and Inclusive cities at ASE addresses important challenges related to rapid urbanization and climate change in Asia-Pacific. It focuses on understanding and modelling the benefits of nature-based solutions – e.g. urban parks or peri-urban forests, road trees, green roofs – in the region to inform policy and practice and create more resilient and inclusive cities. Gut microbiota influences many areas of human health from immunity to energy metabolism and host physiology. The goal of our research group is to understand how bacterial metabolism, diet-microbe, and microbe-microbe interactions influence cardiometabolic disease using experimental approaches. The RF/SRF will lead a project, recently funded by MOE, that explores the protective mechanisms of butyrate-producing bacteria against atherosclerosis. This research will primarily involve molecular biology and pathophysiology using genetically modified mice.

About the Project

The performance-interpretability tradeoff (PIT) in data science and AI refers to the balance between how well a statistical/machine learning model performs, and how readily humans can comprehend it. This project investigates the nature and characteristics of PIT in discourse research, focusing on the following:

i) the (strategically) indeterminate nature of PIT

ii) PIT in time-based algorithms and discourses

iii) conceptual relationship(s) between PIT and ‘mixed-methods’ discourse research, with subsequent developments based on emergent findings.

Discourse datasets to be investigated include psychological counseling, social media, academic lectures, and other relevant time-based contexts, while time-based algorithms include LSTM, ARIMA time series, and survival regression models. The Ramadan Group-Singapore is a newly established research group located at LKCMedicine/NTU. Led by Prof Kristijan Ramadan, who has previously headed a well-established research group in genome stability and cancer research at the University of Oxford, UK (The Ramadan Group-Oxford).

The Ramadan Group-Singapore is actively seeking an enthusiastic, hardworking, motivated, creative, and highly competent research fellow (post-doc) interested in addressing key biological questions in DNA-protein crosslink proteolysis repair. The Ramadan lab has recently discovered DNA-protein crosslink proteolysis repair as a specialised DNA repair pathway for the repair of covalently attached proteins to DNA, known as DNA-protein crosslinks. In collaboration with human geneticists, the laboratory has also identified Ruijs-Aalfs Syndrome, the first human disease associated with biallelic and monogenic mutations in the SPRTN gene/protein, the key enzyme in DNA-protein crosslink proteolysis repair. This novel DNA repair pathway has emerged as an essential mechanism for the protection against accelerated aging and liver cancer, and the upregulation of this repair mechanism is likely linked to cancer patient resistance to various chemotherapies.

The post holder will be responsible for the following:

• Perform a CRISPR/Cas9 screen in several mammalian cell lines.
• Validate the identified hits for their role in DNA repair.
• Execute follow-up experiments to generate a sufficient amount of results for a scientific publication.
• Manage own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small-scale project management to coordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.
• Adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques (specifically CRISPR/Cas9 screen, cell survival, laser micro-irradiation, and DNA combing) and write detailed experimental protocols.
• Test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from various sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate.
