Responsible for performing a variety of professional-level engineering tasks in his/her areas of expertise. May act independently act as the engineer in responsible charge for smaller projects, and for portions of larger or complex projects. May assume project management responsibility for smaller projects, or for subtasks of larger or complex projects. When not assuming project management responsibility, will take technical direction on a project and assignment-specific basis from their supervisor. May be assigned to several projects concurrently, and on each project assignment may report for technical direction to a different supervisor. The Principal Engineer position is a professional-level technical position, with limited responsibility for performing management tasks.

Job Duties/Roles

1. Develops budgets and schedules for assigned projects and project tasks, within requirements of contracts and subject to the approval of Project and Regional Management.

2. Initiates project set up and project management files for projects or sub-projects of moderate complexity.

3. Acts in responsible charge, while directly performing assigned engineering tasks in conformance with the Company’s quality standards and the project budget and schedule.

4. Provides direction and oversight of Engineers, Lead Engineers and Project Engineers assigned to assist the Principal Engineer in execution of project responsibilities.

5. Initiates and maintain communication with clients and contractors for purposes of technical coordination of project requirements.

6. Assists in technical training and mentoring of Engineers, Lead Engineers, and Project Engineers.

7. Participates in marketing of the Company’s services to client contacts and to new clients, as assigned by management.

8. Assists in collection of payment for project work from clients, as assigned by Supervisor.

9. Prepares and submits time charge records, expense reports, invoice approvals, and collections status notices in a timely manner in accordance with Company procedures.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required (KSAR)

1. Ability to utilize basic personal computer applications including spreadsheets, word processors, email, and Internet browsers.

2. Ability to communicate technical aspects of projects and of work assignments to peers, subordinates and clients.

3. Ability to direct the execution of moderately complex engineering tasks.

4. Needs to be familiar with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Management System. (Internal candidates only.)

Minimum years of Experience

Bachelors of Science degree in appropriate engineering discipline (or recognized equivalent), and at least eight (8) years of relevant work experience; or a Master of Science degree in the engineering discipline (or recognized equivalent), and at least seven (7) years relevant work experience; or a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the engineering discipline (or recognized equivalent), and at least five (5) years of relevant work experience.

Required/Preferred Education Requirements

In accordance with established policies, procedures and standards, is responsible for the activities related to an assigned organizational element, program, project or task. Will normally plan, conduct and supervise engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature requiring ingenuity and cross functional coordination.

Job Duties/Roles

1. Provides day-to-day leadership of Engineering staff assigned. Assigns projects to Engineers and monitors the progress of all assigned projects. Ensures the delivery of high quality service and maintenance of good customer relations.

2. Devises new approaches to problems encountered and makes recommendations for changes in methods, procedures or design where necessary.

3. Monitors the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity and timeliness of action of all assigned projects.

4. Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of technical responsibility. Performs engineering reviews and analyses when necessary. Reviews other engineers' work and provides appropriate guidance and training when necessary.

5. Participates in the development and changes of Rules. Advises assigned staff in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations.

6. Prepares written response to clients in accordance with established procedures.

7. Maintains liaison with other engineering specialists internally and externally.

8. Monitors the performance, development potential and training needs of engineers assigned. Keeps management informed of manpower needs.

9. Develops or assists in the development of qualification statements, proposals, bids and other presentation materials.

10. Implements and maintains the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems within assigned area of responsibility.

11. Prepares accurate billing to clients.

Job Description & Requirements

Will take part in formal and on-the-job training programs. Will perform work assignments that are related to onshore, offshore and marine risk and safety, under the direct supervision of an experienced engineer. Work assignments are designated to familiarize the incumbent with the Company’s business, policies, methods and procedures for delivery to Client.

Job Duties/Roles

• Performs and supports risk and safety studies for onshore, offshore and marine projects, as assigned, for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations and contract commitments.
• Performs analysis with specialized software with guidance from Senior Engineers.
• Assists in the development of proposed solutions to Client with respect to study findings as determined by needs and for projects assigned.
• Prepares written, technically accurate and timely responses to faxes and letters from clients or other technical groups.
• Drafts technically accurate reports detailing the results of various studies performed for review by a senior Engineer.
• Prepares accurate and timely weekly reports and requests for invoices on all work performed.
• Participates in related training seminars.
• Undergoes ABS Quality System training and applies the TQM principle in the work environment.
• Communicates the status of the current workload to all appropriate members of the organization’s team to insure the needs of the clients will be met.

The Engineer is responsible for handling engineering design review and analysis assignments normally involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty, require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or science. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods and procedures.

Job Duties/Roles

• Provide risk and reliability engineering activities for marine and offshore projects utilizing both qualitative and quantitative reliability analysis methods such as HAZID, HAZOP, Fault tree analysis, Quantitative Risk Assessment, fire/explosion/dispersion consequence simulations, etc.
• Review engineering technical specifications and drawings in the area of process and control engineering.
• Prepare technical reports to identify units posing an excessive risk to Safety, Assets, and the Environment.
• Advise and confer with engineers in design review meetings and technical workshops to give risk and reliability findings and recommendations.
• Active in assisting the team with business development opportunities and technical proposal drafting.
• Perform any duties assigned by the supervisor.

• Knowledge of related technical disciplines is preferred.
• Related experience in their field and demonstrated capabilities preferred.
• Independent, minimal supervision required due to specialized nature of the position.

Consequence software experience preferred – E.g. PHAST, FLACS, KFX, InFlux, Fluent

Experience with offshore Formal Safety Assessments preferred.

Job Capsule

The Project Manager has overall responsibility for the technical, budget, schedule administrative and financial execution of individual projects. Depending on business needs, this may be a collateral duty. The Project Manager functionally reports to the Director/Manager of Projects. The Project Manager may be assigned to several projects concurrently and may also be assigned to perform specific marketing related functions including presentation of company qualifications for project opportunities and preparation of proposals. The Project Manager position is a management-level position, with both technical and management responsibilities. Projects are typically executed on an independent basis, with assistance by assigned staff, though subject to independent quality assurance and financial/management performance audits.

Job Duties/Roles

1. Participates in the development of budgets, schedules and profit objectives for assigned projects, within requirements of contracts and subject to the approval of Director/Manager of Projects.

2. Participates in negotiating budgets, schedules, project terms and conditions on specific proposal opportunities.

3. Provides input to staffing requirements in support of project execution plan.

4. Sets up the project, initiates project management files, and maintains project files and documentation for assigned projects.

5. Provides project direction to and oversight of Engineers and Surveyors assigned to projects.

6. Assures projects are executed within approved budget and schedule.

7. Prepares technically accurate and timely reports related to the project as required by the client.

8. Actively monitors client feedback and service delivery status and serves as a supplementary point of contact for clients on assigned projects.

9. Assists management in identifying employee training and development needs.

10. Responsible, for monitoring progress of the project, for both engineering and survey, relative to actual time expended, fees invoiced and expenses incurred versus those budgeted.

11. Responsible for monitoring project accounts receivable concerning the client’s account and working with client to maintain timely payments.

12. Assists in the preparation and submission of time charge records, expense reports, invoice approvals, and collections status notices in accordance with company procedures.
