Overview
At AltSchool, we merge Montessori-inspired principles with therapeutic practices in a dynamic, classroom-like setting. As an Assistant Teacher, you’ll play a pivotal role in supporting our full-day programme, designed to provide consistency for children and a reliable schedule for parents. With a low teacher-to-student ratio of 1:3 or 1:4, we ensure each child receives individualised care, and you’ll gain hands-on experience working closely with children of diverse needs and abilities.
First 90 Days
- Immerse yourself in AltSchool’s approach, blending play-responsive methods, Montessori principles, and evidence-based therapies.
- Get up to speed with our policies, procedures, and digital tools, including our school management system and Individualised Education Plans (IEPs).
- Collaborate with and support lead teachers and therapists to implement tailored educational plans and set up classrooms for effective learning.
- Learn to manage behaviours, implement routines, and support children’s progress.
- Assist in documenting daily notes, progress updates, and class preparations to ensure a seamless educational experience.
- Build rapport with families to establish trust and communication channels.
Typical Expectations
- Work closely with lead teachers to manage classroom activities, behaviours, and daily routines.
- Prepare learning materials and adapt activities to meet individual needs.
- Collaborate with therapists and other professionals to address IEP goals.
- Track and document student progress, sharing meaningful insights with the team.
- Actively contribute ideas and solutions to improve classroom practices and team workflows.
Requirements
- A diploma or degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, or a related field.
- At least 1 year of experience working with children, preferably in a special needs setting.
- Certifications in DIR Floortime or similar methodologies are a plus.
- Strong adaptability, creativity, and an eagerness to embrace challenges.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to thrive in a collaborative, self-managed team environment.
- A proactive and flexible approach to classroom duties
