As a Trainee Trader, you will play a vital role in Avra’s commodity trading operations. Founded in 2011, Avra is a leading, fully integrated physical commodity trader specializing in bulk commodities within the Asia Pacific region.
With a team of over 70 professionals and representation in 10 countries, Avra operates key offices in Singapore, Zug and Dubai. We trade more than 15 million tonnes of bulk commodities annually and own a majority stake in the Callide coal mine in Queensland, Australia (c. 10 million tonnes per year of annual production). The Role
Initially, your focus will be on supporting the daily operations of our physical trading business. This will involve managing the end-to-end execution of physical trades and serving as a critical link between senior traders, operations teams, finance teams, external suppliers, buyers, and banks.
As you grow and develop in the role, you will become more involved in identifying and executing new trading opportunities, building and managing key customer relationships, exploring opportunities in new markets, and contributing to the strategic direction of our trading business. You will report directly to Avra’s CEO and work closely with senior traders and other experienced executives.
Key Responsibilities
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Market Research & Analysis: Conduct research on market trends, price movements, and supply-demand dynamics. Analyze economic indicators and geopolitical events affecting commodity markets.
- Trade Execution: Assist in the execution of physical commodity trades, coordinate logistics, and ensure timely delivery.
- Relationship Management: Support senior traders in managing relationships with suppliers, customers, and logistics partners. Assist in contract negotiations and pricing discussions.
- Risk & Compliance: Monitor market exposure, support risk management strategies, and ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
- Data & Documentation: Maintain accurate records of trades, contracts, and market data.
- Oversee financial reconciliations, trade documentation, and audit requirements.
- Reporting: Prepare reports on trading activities, market trends, and performance metrics.
- Contribute to internal and external presentations.
- Collaboration & Communication: Coordinate with traders, logistics, finance, and shipping teams to ensure smooth execution of trade transactions. Assist in resolving operational issues.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
- 2-4 years of experience in accounting, finance, commodity trading, or a related field.
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Economics, Business, or a related discipline.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with proficiency in Excel.
- Detail-oriented, proactive, self-motivated, and a strong team player with a collaborative yet competitive mindset.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to perform well under pressure and adapt to fast-paced environments.
- Willingness to travel internationally and potentially relocate.
