Project Background

SEC is leading the interdisciplinary Cooling Singapore 2.0 project. The project is dedicated to reducing the urban heat island and improving the outdoor thermal comfort in Singapore. The project has develop a Digital Urban Climate Twin (DUCT) for Singapore. This includes development, deployment and operations of the necessary technical infrastructure and integration of a variety of computational models for anthropogenic heat emissions and urban climate simulations. The project is entering its final phase where is testing and transferring the DUCT to external stake holders.

Task/Job description

We are looking for a talented individual to join our interdisciplinary and international team based at the Singapore ETH-Centre.

Your key responsibilities are:

- Model and simulate the impact of district energy systems (with a special focus on cooling technologies) to urban warming in Singapore.

- Test the Energy system models to fine tune their performance in side the DUCT and de-bug when needed.

- Scenario testing. Carry a sensitivity analysis of the Energy model to understand its performance.

- Integrate these optimization algorithms into the Digital Urban Climate Twin platform.

Requirements

You should have:

- Master’s or PhD degree in Operations Research, Energy Systems, Process engineering, Civil engineering, Mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.

- A good command of scripting and data analysis languages (Python, Matlab, R) is preferred.

- Experience working with model-based energy and/or building systems design is a plus.

- Experience running and testing the energy model City Energy Analyst is a plus.

- Experience working in interdisciplinary teams.

- Excellent presentation and communication skills.

- Competency to execute excellent independent work and engage with external stakeholders.

Job Description

The Senior Software Engineer who job focus will be designing, developing, and maintaining AI-based systems and will work closely with researchers, software engineers, User Experience/User Interface Designers and project managers on the FCL Global Engagement Platform that is a cyber-physical space to bridge between the two hubs in Singapore and Zurich.

Duties and Responsibilities

The scope of work shall comprise of but shall not be limited to:

• Application of your skills in machine learning, programming, data analytics, and other technologies to create intelligent applications that can learn from data and make decisions.
• Application of your knowledge and experience in full lifecycle software development to develop high quality, innovative and fully performing software that complies with coding standards and technical design.
• Developing well-designed, testable and efficient code using practices like unit testing and test-driven development.
• Conducting code reviews, suggesting improvements and maintaining software by other engineers.
• Gathering user requirements and develop flowcharts, layouts, technical specifications and documentation to identify requirements and solutions.
• Architecting and designing the systems and software framework to enhance extensibility and scalability using modern practices such as caching, continuous integration/continuous deployment, containerisation and container management, and Cloud practices.
• Mentoring and coaching other Engineers in best practices.

Necessary Requirements

• You have completed your studies in computer science or equivalent related field (bachelor's/master's) and are currently a Technology leader with at least 5 years of proven work experience and have gained a broad knowledge of different full stack technologies, methods, and architectures.
• Your architectural decisions are characterised by non-functional requirements such as availability, flexibility, stability, ease of maintenance and security.
• You have experience in data modelling and engineering using tools such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, and AWS S3 to acquire, clean, and transform data into a suitable format for analysis.
• You have experience in Big data analysis using big data tools such as SparkSQL, Apache Flink, and to query and manipulate large datasets.
• You have experience in Machine learning models and how to evaluate the performance of these models.
• You are familiar with cloud-based AI and machine learning services offered by major providers such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
• You have experience in using tools such as Docker and Kubernetes for containerization, configuration management, and orchestrating deployments as well as monitoring and maintaining the performance of AI systems post-deployment.
• You have experience implementing strong data security and privacy measures in order to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the data you handle as well as understanding regulations related to ethical user of AI and data protection, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and implementing secure AI frameworks that comply with these regulations.
• You have experience in development languages like Java, Python as well as with PHP for web development as well as relational and NoSQL databases. You are also familiar with technologies like REST, web services and messaging.
• In addition to your experience in Java, Python and PHP, you have experience to implement solutions using modern JavaScript frameworks like ReactJS and Angular.
• You are still an active hands-on contributor in software engineering with the above; expect that we will require you to demonstrate that your skills are current in the interview process.

Project background

FHT's Mobile Health Interventions module investigates how mobile phones and wearable technology can be leveraged to assist individuals in preventing diabetes and depression from a public health perspective.

Towards that goal, we have developed a comprehensive mobile app that delivers evidence-based intervention to induce healthy behaviour change.

Task/Job description

1. Develop and maintain a ReactNative app for Android and iOS

2. Interface with iOS and Android system APIs to retrieve smartphone sensor and wearable data

3. Write unit tests using Jest to ensure code quality and reliability

4. Containerize and deploy backend services using Docker

5. Extend and maintain existing Java-based services

Requirements

(Education or skills requirements)

• A university or university of applied sciences degree in computer science, software engineering, or similar fields

Job description

The scope of work shall comprise of but shall not be limited to:

Personnel Management (in collaboration with SEC's HR team and FHT management team)

• Prepare, check, coordinate and take responsibility of the hiring processes for FHT with SEC HR
• Manage personnel database and report generation
• Support FHT PIs and researchers on various administrative tasks (eg: contract extensions/changes, new hiring etc).
• Prepare and manage any kind of contracts with actual and future entities/partners.

Infrastructure Management (in collaboration with relevant FHT and SEC teams)

• Manage the infrastructure and resource requirements in the FHT work spaces
• Manage FHT software and hardware requirements with SEC IT
• Organise and manage Assets
• Manage purchase of assets for FHT

Other tasks

• Manage day to day operations to run the programme smoothly with FHT team
• Strategizes process improvements along with the FHT team
• Communicate with CREATE building management teams to coordinate room bookings and IT arrangements for meetings
• Assist in meeting logistics (ex: coordinating guests, arranging food/IT etc logistics) as needed during meetings and events
• Assist FHT in simple Finance tasks where needed

Task/Job description

• This position is under the FRS programme. The researcher will maintain and further develop InfraRisk, an integrated platform for the electricity grid, water network and transport system quantifying the effects of weather-related disruptive events on interdependent systems.
• The platform will be leveraged to design system resilience against disruptive events and across system interdependencies, with a focus on simulating and testing disruption/restoration scenarios relevant to Southeast Asia.
• An important technical aspect will be to model the recovery strategies considering interdependencies between the power, water, and transport systems.
• The ultimate goal of the integrated platform will be to identify features and requirements that aid in developing solutions to improve resilience.

Requirements

• The successful applicant must hold either a Master’s degree with a minimum of 1 year of working experience or a PhD/equivalent University level diploma in electrical, industrial & operational research, civil, mechanical, control engineering, or a related field.
• Principal qualifications include strong programming experience (preferably MATLAB or Python), analytical and quantitative skills and experience with robust optimization.
