Job Purpose
The School Nurse provides medical care for students throughout the school day, and oversees school wellness programs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
Provide Nursing Care Services
- Dispense prescription medications to students as per parents or doctors’ instructions / medical directives.
- Provide basic first aid for minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes and bruises, and stabilising severely ill or injured students until parents, guardians or emergency services arrive;
- Ensure a clear and smooth communication with the families and the team members.
- Complete relevant nursing documentation.
- Maintain and restock First Aid Kits
Manage School Wellness Program
- Educate students on hygiene and safety practices.
- Collect and analyse statistics using our record.
- Organise meetings with the School Principal to follow-up on healthcare needs.
- Participate and moderate educational team meetings to better assist special needs children, and liaise with the Special Needs support team of practitioners.
- Participate in the organisation of protocols to deal with major emergencies occurring in the school.
- Communicate with the canteen service to come up with balanced, healthy meals adapted to the children and follow-up weekly.
- Conduct student hearing and vision screenings.
- Verify vaccination records.
Daily Routine Duties
- Communicate and coordinate with the school cleaners and classroom assistants to ensure that they are adequately equipped and informed on hygiene and safety practices.
- Record student absences, communicate with families in case of a child’s absence, finding out the reasons, thus getting a better visibility of the potential diseases in the school.
If while carrying out the duties of the role, the job holder identifies any instance that a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm either at school or at home, s/he must report any concerns to the School Principal so that a referral can be made accordingly to the relevant third-party services.
Job Competencies
- Standard clinical skills to dispense medications and treat minor ailments and injuries
- Adequate math skills to ensure proper dosage amounts when dispensing medications
- Good communication skills to work with students and parents
- Ability to demonstrate a calm, caring demeanour when working with children
- Good presentation skills for training school staff
- Ability to remain focused in the event of a student medical emergency.
Job Key Relationships
- Line managed by School Principal
- Liaise with School Principal, pedagogical team, and other support team members
- Liaise with parents, guardians, and other external parties like Special Needs healthcare practitioners, ambulance paramedics, enrichment activities providers etc.
Required Qualifications and Desired Attributes
- Must have completed a minimum of 1,000 hours of clinical experience or three years of academic experience.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience as a school nurse is preferred; experience with young children will be considered a plus.
- Fluency in English, bilingual in French and English is preferred, but not a must.

Working Conditions
Workplace
- Most time on La Petite Ecole campus site, when needed or required, off site on school functions, excursions, meetings, events, and professional development.
Work Time
- Monday to Thursday: from 8am until 5pm
- Friday: from 8am until 4pm
- Attending the team meetings in the week prior to back-to-school day.
