Legal Counsel (Data Compliance/Protection)
We have been engaged by our client who is a global leader in the TMT Space in Search for a Legal Counsel to lead and establish a comprehensive global data protection and privacy framework.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a scalable data compliance (including data privacy and protection) strategy and framework in one region, (one of: Japan and Korea, USA or EU). Lead external local legal resources on execution of strategy and framework to ensure compliance and the highest standard.
- Ensure compliance with international data laws and advise stakeholders on regulatory developments.
- Ensure that all local legal entities operate in full compliance with the laws and regulations of the jurisdictions in which they are registered or operate.
- Oversee the maintenance of local entity registration, reporting, and other statutory obligations.
- Provide guidance and counsel to local teams on governance, regulatory reporting, and compliance with local labor, tax, and corporate laws.
- Coordinate with local legal teams and external counsel to ensure compliance with region-specific regulatory requirements, including business licenses, corporate filings, and corporate governance.
- Monitor changes in local laws and regulations, ensuring timely updates and compliance adjustments across all local entities.
- Support commercial legal needs, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts with vendors, partners, and other stakeholders.
- Provide legal advice on upcoming commercial strategies and initiatives.
- Provide legal advice on IP protection, Licensing, Commercialisation and Risk.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in law with admission to a recognized bar. Data Privacy certifications (e.g., CIPP/E, CIPM) are highly valued but not mandatory.
- 7+ years of experience with a strong focus on data privacy, data protection, and data compliance, with additional experience in commercial legal work.
- Well-versed in privacy laws across one or more jurisdictions: the US, EU, Japan, and Korea.
- Effective in utilizing and guiding overseas resources, including external counsel
