The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a University Research Institute at NTU with a mission to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies.

EOS invites applications for a Research Fellow in ocean modelling specific to coastal waters in (and around) Singapore. The candidate will examine the conduct high-resolution ocean model (ROMS) simulations to study past and future marine heatwave events in Singapore and examine their impacts on marine ecosystems. The position is a key component of the Marine Climate Chance Science (MCCS) Programme aimed at assessing the long-term viability of mangroves and coral reefs as nature-based climate solutions in Singapore. The Research Fellow will work in a multidisciplinary research team, including coral reef geomorphology, sea level studies, climate modelling, and sedimentology to understand the response of Singapore’s coastal and marine ecosystems to anthropogenic and climate change impacts.

Key Responsibilities:

• Set up and run high-resolution ocean model (ROMS) simulations to study past and future marine heatwaves in Singapore (and the wider SE Asia region)
• Global climate model (e.g., CMIP6) data analysis related to the project goals
• Handle data management and statistical analysis
• Work effectively with colleagues from the project, and with local and international collaborators
• Writing and publication of results in peer-reviewed journals
• Presentation of research work in various forums (e.g., international conferences)

Job Requirements:

• PhD degree in oceanography, climate science, or a closely related field
• Prior experience of working with ocean and numerical models (ROMS preferred)
• Knowledge of ocean and climate dynamics within Indo-Pacific region
• Experience in handling large climate datasets
• Excellent knowledge of data analysis tools in climate science
• Prior experience in publishing first-authored papers in peer-reviewed journals
• Excellent oral and written communications skills in English

REQUIREMENTS

Responsibilities:

• Administrative support for various A*STAR Grants
• Support in A*STAR grant calls including drafting of grant call announcements to faculty, advising PIs and school administrators on funding guidelines, work processes and grant call opportunities.
• Provide guidance to faculty and School administrators to better understand the grant requirements through checklists or guides or standardized forms
• Facilitate on the budget scrubbing process prior to the award of the project

EOS invites applications for a Research Fellow in palynology (pollen) and sedimentology research relating to tropical mangrove environments in Singapore. The position will involve the use of sedimentary cores to reconstruct the geomorphic evolution of mangrove systems and investigate mangrove survival thresholds and ecological tipping points relating to past sea-level change. The position is a key component of the Marine Climate Chance Science (MCCS) Programme aimed at assessing the long-term viability of mangroves as nature-based climate solutions in Singapore. The candidate will work under the supervision of Assistant Professor Kyle Morgan and Research Assistant Professor Stephen Chua, as well as a team of leading international scientists to understand the response of Singapore’s coastal and marine ecosystems to anthropogenic and climate change impacts.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct pollen grain counts with accurate identification of species (including statistical methods related to pollen analysis)
• Manage, guide and train student interns/PhD students/Research staff in pollen preparation and analysis
• Maintenance of documentation, including inhouse data repository, and GitHub repository, if applicable
• Publish the scientific outcomes of this research in high quality, peer-reviewed, international scientific journals
• Perform other relevant research tasks assigned by the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator
• Develop and conduct laboratory protocols for core-based sediment and microfossil sample preparation (e.g., pollen slides) and analysis
• Manage and procure lab resources/equipment/chemicals relating to sediment and pollen analysis
