Roles & Responsibilities
- Manages and builds an active and efficient book/video program in assigned subject areas by acquiring new projects; accomplishes this through email and phone/video correspondence, attending meetings, traveling for university visits as needed, consulting with book series editors, volume editors, authors, etc.
- Meets annual individual and/or team targets set by editorial management for book/video publishing agreements signed, and for book/video projects transmitted to production
- Prepares and presents book/video proposals and publishing agreements to satisfaction of manager and/or Editorial Director
- Presents new developments and status of book/video programs (as well as those of direct reports) to Editorial Director and others as needed
- Corresponds with volume editors and authors to troubleshoot issues that may arise during development or production of manuscript/video project
- Reviews and approves manuscripts/video projects submitted by vendor for responsible-editor approval
- Corresponds with and monitors external vendor project coordinators to ensure book projects are completed efficiently and according to schedule
- Interacts with Springer staff members from all departments, including editorial, production, marketing, sales, royalties, customer service, and others
- Conducts market and competitive research
- Reports on book project progress using department’s shared online status report
- May manage Editor(s) and Associate Editor(s) as formal direct reports
- Works with various proprietary Springer electronic systems as well as third-party software packages (Word, Excel, Google applications, etc.)
Experience, skills, and qualifications
- Strong demonstrable experience in STM publishing.
- Strong team management and leadership experience.
- Educated to Masters degree level (or equivalent), in a relevant field, or a combination of advanced degree and editorial experience.
- Strong understanding of the book market.
- Excellent communication skills, including oral and written presentation skills.
- Customer-focused.
- Strong prioritization and time management skills.
- Strong financial skills, including experience with budgeting and P&L oversight.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Enthusiastic and committed.
