Job Description

One Research Engineer position is open in the research group of Assistant Professor Zhao Lin, at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS).

The Research Engineer (RE) will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) on visual navigation foundation model for mobile robots, exploration using reinforcement learning control, learning-based control, etc. The RE will develop and train algorithms that enable intelligent and robust autonomous navigation in unseen environments. Hardware experiments will be carried out to test and demonstrate the applications of the developed algorithms.

The initial appointment duration is 12 months, which can then be extended based on an evaluation at the end of the initial appointment.

The candidates should have a Master’s degree from a reputable university, with expertise in robot learning, reinforcement learning, and aerial robotics.

A successful candidate should have a solid mathematical background (such as in calculus, linear algebra, ODE/PDE, optimization, real analysis, probability theory, stochastic process, etc). Strong publication records in leading journals and conferences of the relevant fields, and practical hands-on experience in applying visual foundation models to real mobile robots are required.

Qualifications

Job Description

We are seeking to recruit a research fellow to join the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at the National University of Singapore (NUS) launched on 5 September 2024, the first of its kind in Asia to advance research in alternative proteins. Led by experts from NUS and research institutes in Singapore, the Centre aims to drive global food security and accelerate regional innovation. The focus will be on microalgae research and biomass fermentation, to produce high-quality, affordable, and sustainable microbial proteins from microalgae and biomass fermentation that can be further developed into cultured meat and plant-based protein hybrids. Microbial proteins will be cultivated through fermentation and processed using emerging bio-physical techniques for effective biotransformation, to improve digestibility, flavour, and nutritional profile. As a research fellow, you will lead projects to optimise microalgae cultivation processes and apply bio-physical techniques to improve nutritional and organoleptic properties. Appointments will be initially made on a 1-year contract, renewable for up to 5 years.

Responsibilities:
- Conduct research activities in accordance with the Centre objectives involving but not limited to:
i. Conversion of industrial food side-streams into media suitable for microalgae cultivation.
ii. Microalgae cultivations in flask and benchtop bioreactors under batch, fed batch, or continuous modes.
iii. Conduct chromatographic, spectroscopic, and fluorescent analyses to monitor microalgae growth.

This role provides direct support to the VP HR, Emerging Market (EM) on planning, preparation, coordination, and delivery of key strategic focuses and projects of People Priorities, as part of Global HR community. The scope will have a regional focus spanning across EM, an exciting region with a double-digit growth ambition and driving innovations. The Region is strategically segregated across 3 market archetypes namely Direct (Brazil, India, Saudi, Turkey, Mexico, and Vietnam), Growth (Argentina, LSP, Gulf, Philippines, Thailand, Colombia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Caricam) and Performance (Russia, Ukraine, Morocco, Pakistan, Egypt, Algeria, and other partner markets).

Key Responsibilities

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities as follows:

• Support the EM HR organization in the delivery of key projects across HR and the business.
• Work directly with the VP HR EM to ensure the HR agenda and objectives are driven forward.
• Partner with Senior Stakeholders to scope out projects/initiatives including:
• Project deliverables
• Timelines
• Identify resources currently in place and required.
• Measure of Success
• Constraints / Risks to successful outcome
• Orchestrate HR operations and approval governances at EM regional level.
• Develop and implement an annual plan of activities e.g. talent reviews, leadership programme nominations, P&R, market visits, objective setting across EM HR.
• Identify, partner, and manage the various stakeholders across the wider HR organization and across the EM HR teams.
• Act as a channel for escalated issues/concerns and implement strategies to resolve risk and constraints.
• Through project implementation, ensure the HR model is being leveraged effectively and promote principles of driving work to the appropriate level.
• Recognize the level of confidentiality and complexity of given projects and manage appropriately.
• Coordinate the collection and tracking of HR metrics.

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience (HR, Finance or Project Management)
• Exposure to working in a highly complex organization with a matrix structure and with multiple lines of authority leveraging influence within a complex network of stakeholders.
• Demonstrated right level of enterprise and strategic thinking, juggle priorities for an impact, while paying attention to details.
• Experience working in an integrated way with the business’ agendas, with right level of business acumen, intellectual curiosity, learning agility, and leadership resiliency.
  Able to show insight and good judgement within business teams to deliver sound decisions and solutions.
• Project management skills and experience in the design, planning and implementation of restructure and culture change programmes in multi-cultural and fast-paced organization. This will have included due diligence, analysis of costs and budgets, planning, managing risks effectively and delivering projects on time.
• Demonstrates a good track record of translating business objectives into HR solutions through appropriately setting the direction, objectives, targets, and metrics. Able to take responsibility to deliver against demanding projects or initiatives and meets criteria of time, cost, quality, and performance.
• Demonstrated experience delivering HR solutions within demanding operational contexts, i.e. resourcing, performance management, change management, consultation, and reward issues, across a range of functions and job types.
