Job Summary: As a Design Engineer (Mechanical), you will be responsible for end-to-end mechanical engineering work for our AFL line of Fiber-Optic telecommunication products (e.g. cable harness and assemblies, connectors, panels, cabinets and accessories). The work-scope includes early-stage/front-end development, product design, check & optimization, integration, industrialization, life-cycle management/sustaining engineering etc.

Key Responsibilities:

• Mechanical design and development of product functions and modules to meet user and business requirements, compliance, quality and cost.
• Collaborate with various stakeholders such as Quality, Product Management, Solution Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain functions as well as End-user/Customers etc.
• Translate “up-stream” user/system requirements as well as applicable industry standards (e.g. IEC, EN, GR) into measurable “down-stream” technical design requirements
• Support Commercial/Sales team through generation of concept designs and presentations for pitch to customers
• Create product intellectual property and patent submissions
• Create test & verification plans for the developed/designed elements and parts
• Interface with manufacturing team and/or external suppliers for new product industrialization
• Support Quality incidents and lead effort in failure analysis/troubleshooting
• Develop solution in support of manufacturing & quality improvement
• Generate documentation, including engineering reports, BOM, technical drawings, design specifications, installation guides for users etc.

Main Requirements:

• 3-5 years of work experience in product engineering design/development and transfer to manufacturing
• Bachelor’s in Engineering (Diploma in engineering with at least 7 years’ experience in product engineering design may be considered)
• Conversant in both English & Mandarin (spoken and written)
• Proficient in CAD Software for 2D drawing and 3D Model application (Solidworks preferred)
• Familiar with Product & CAD Lifecycle Management workflow processes and tools (e.g. Solidworks PDM, PTC Windchill etc..)
• Conversant with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards (e.g. ASME Y14.5)
• Knowledge and competence in stack tolerancing, mechanical design analysis and validation based on theoretical calculation (e.g. stress and deformation)
• Knowledge of common industrial plastics, as well as experience in designing parts for plastic injection molding
• Knowledge of common industrial metals, as well as experience in designing parts for using standard metal fabrication & forming processes (e.g. CNC machining, sheet metal deep-drawing & stamping)
• Knowledge in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA)
• Experience in the following areas will be added advantage: (1) Data-center, or Fiber-Optic telecommunication Cable industry, (2) Design of connectors, cable harness and assemblies, (3) Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), (4) Knowledge of statistical methods and Six-Sigma techniques (e.g. DOE, GR&R, SPC, Cpk analysis), (5) Finite Element simulation tools (e.g. Solidworks Simulation, ANSYS Mechanical)

Other Important Notes:

• This role is based in Singapore AFL office
• Candidate is expected to be an independent and pro-active self-starter (e.g. taking initiatives to drive new or improve current way-of-working/processes)
• Candidate will be working with a global team (i.e. North and South America, Europe, UK, APAC)
• As this role requires frequent interactions with international customer and counterparts, candidate must be able to accommodate to work calls and meetings outside normal office hours (due to time-zone differences)
• International travel may be required (up to 20% of the time)

Key Roles and Responsibilities

• Provide support to Business Development by producing technical proposal, estimated project PV capacity and costing through technical assessment of site and drawings
• Produce design drawings e.g., Single line diagram, Module arrangement layout, Stringing arrangement, inverter arrangement using AutoCAD software
• Develop design specifications and functional requirements for projects
• Complete system designs for PV projects including site plans, mechanical racking and attachment plans, single-line electrical drawings, specification of balance of system location and interconnection details
• Analyze factors affecting performance of PV systems
• Perform software simulations of solar photovoltaic (PV) system performance & energy production
• Perform design calculation, voltage drop, fault current and etc
• Provide engineering support during installation
• Review and approval of engineering drawing submissions from contractors
• Ensure the compliance of specifications and requirements in the signed EPC contracts
• Work with O&M Team to review system performance and improve engineering design

Qualifications & Experience

• Degree/Diploma in Electrical engineering discipline
• 2 years experience in Solar PV system design / engineering

Skills/competencies & Preferred Characteristics

• Self-starter and ability to self-manage
• Able to perform in a fast-paced environment
• Familiarity with different PV system types (Ground/Floating) are a plus
• Can-do attitude, problem solver
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office and proficient in excel spreadsheet and formulas
• Flexible and Willing to learn
• Good understanding of work ethics and takes ownership of tasks
• Familiar with design software such as PVSyst, AutoCAD, Sketchup etc.
• Able to contribute and work efficiently as a team member and achieve objectives as a group
