A Clinical Microbiologist position is available at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) in Singapore.

KKH is an 830-bed tertiary-level care hospital that provides obstetric, gynaecological, paediatric and other services. It is part of the SingHealth group of public hospitals. As an academic medical centre, KKH is a teaching hospital for Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

The position is based at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM), which provides a range of comprehensive laboratory services to KKH and includes the Microbiology Service of which this position is a part.

The Clinical Microbiologist will be part of a team of two microbiologists. They will provide diagnostic and consultative clinical microbiology services to the hospital and participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities commensurate with the activities of an academic medical centre. The activities range from bench-level advice and management of the clinical microbiology service, quality control of a medical diagnostic laboratory to communication of critical microbiology results, antimicrobial treatment advice and other consultative services to staff of all clinical disciplines in the hospital. This includes regular interaction with the hospital’s infectious diseases service and the infection control unit, and close collaboration with the other laboratory disciplines.

Requirements

You should be a qualified and experienced medical specialist with relevant quali­fications that are registrable with the Singapore Medical Council, and have a specialist qualification in Microbiology (Pathology/Laboratory Medicine) that can be recognised by the Specialists Accreditation Board.

[What you will be working on]

You will be part of a team that will set up long-term monitoring of birds and mammals as part of NParks’ Tropical Forest Ecology Research Programme.

Specifically, you will:

• Carry out bird surveys and camera-trapping in the programme’s network of permanent forest plots

• Plan for surveys and prepare the necessary permissions and equipment prior to each session of field work

• Manage the data acquired, including sorting and identification of animals captures in photographs/videos and audio recordings

• Maintain equipment and support procurement needs of the project

• Oversee interns, volunteers and research students attached to this study

• Assist in data analysis, visualisations of data, making of maps, drafting of reports and presentations and conduct of workshops to share the knowledge and findings from the stud

[What we are looking for]

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences or related disciplines

• Physically fit enough to carry equipment and walk long distances in forested terrain and carry out field surveys

• Preferably with experience with bird surveys or camera-trapping studies

• Organised, meticulous and independent

• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment under time pressure

• Good written and verbal communication skills in English language

• Prior experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) software and with scripting languages (e.g. R or Python) would be advantageous

• Possession of Class 3 Driving License will be an advantage

Job Description

The position will report to the relevant Senior Researcher in Research Division and will work in collaboration with the Principal Investigators and the Project Manager for the project(s).

The responsibilities of the Researcher include, but are not limited to the following:

• Contribute to the design, development and implementation of specific research projects including:Conducting literature review
  Designing research instruments
  Collecting and managing data
  Performing data cleaning, preparation, and analysis
  Compiling and organising data findings
  Communicating research findings in required formats (reports, articles, presentations)

Job Requirements

• A degree in education / social science / economics / statistics / psychology (behavioral science) with substantial quantitative training.
• Interest to pursue research in the field of economic development and social equity, with regards to work, employment, learning, skills, labour markets and technology.
• About two years of work experience in research and/or policy areas using quantitative methods. Those without the requisite experience may still apply.
• Knowledge in statistical analysis techniques and ability to perform statistical analyses using tools such as STATA or R.
• Sound analytical skills, with the ability to connect theoretical knowledge and empirical data with emerging social issues.
• Ability to write and document research findings clearly in research presentations and reports.
• Good communication, administrative and project management skills.
