Job Description

Research Fellow position is open in the research group of Assistant Professor Zhao Lin, at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS).

The Research Fellow will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) on theories and applications of learning-based control. The project will investigate and develop both deep reinforcement learning algorithms and conventional robust adaptive control methods, to develop safety-critical learning-based control algorithms that leverage the advantages of both model-based and model-free methods. In particular, the developed algorithms will be demonstrated through robust control of drones.

The initial appointment duration is 12 months, which can then be extended based on an evaluation at the end of the initial appointment.

The candidates will be responsible for conducting theoretical research and algorithm development. The candidates are expected to help the PI supervise junior PhD students as well.

The candidates should have a Ph.D. degree from a reputable university, with expertise in robust adaptive control, reinforcement learning theory, collision-avoidance trajectory optimization, etc.

A successful candidate should have a solid mathematical background (such as in calculus, linear algebra, optimization, etc.). Strong publication records in leading journals and conferences are required.

Qualifications

• Possess a Ph.D. Degree in either Electrical Engineering or strictly related (e.g., Mathematics, Computer, Communication, Mechanical, or Information Engineering).

Responsibilities

• Coverage of large corporates (MNCs & Government Linked Companies)
• Perform independent credit analysis and evaluation, including financial analysis and projections on new and existing banking facilities/ loans to make recommendations for approval
• Identify key risks and mitigating factors in the credit evaluation and present cases to the Credit Committee for deliberation and approval
• Conduct customer visits together with Front office to understand the business operations
• Plan and organize to ensure credit reviews are completed in timely manner
• Recommending ad-hoc trade requests based on approving

Requirements

• Bachelor degree and above, preferably in Business, Accounting, Banking, Finance, Economics or other related disciplines
• 3 years of experience in similar capacity. Prior experience in banking sector is highly advantageous

To be responsible for a portfolio of Bank’s corporate clients (with portfolio diversified across various sector) and to analyse and make recommendations on counterparty transaction proposals submitted by the Business for existing or new clients. Given MUFG Bank growth aspirations, transaction size and/or complexity, many transactions including new clients will require early engagement and close cooperation across different Business areas and support functions, in order to support and guide the Business in respect to risk appetite, due diligence, structuring, financial modelling and risk assessment. This is an important hire within ICD A&O and the role requires a high calibre individual who can take on a high level of responsibility with minimum supervision and has the capability to progress within the organisation.

• Provide strategic direction and support towards organisational and departmental objective achievements by closely collaborating with the key stakeholders on a dynamic basis.
• Evaluation of credit applications, internal ratings and transaction proposals for new or existing corporate and/or financial institution clients in A&O with focus on Corporate related transactions. This includes reviewing transaction material and the analysis submitted by the Business, where appropriate challenging assumptions and conclusions.
• Providing solutions and adding value to the Business by engaging in client and transaction discussions, due diligence, giving clear guidance on policy and risk appetite and influencing transaction structures and facility terms & conditions to mitigate risk.
• Engaging with the Business on early stage potential transactions, forming a view on these transactions and as appropriate, discussing and presenting these to ICD senior management. Attend deal screening committees and communicate credit views and challenges on proposals.
• Present transactions in a concise and clear manner to senior Business and ICD management both locally and overseas, evidencing deep knowledge of the client, transaction, and risks & mitigants. Provide clearly articulated views on whether a client and proposal is bankable and if not, where appropriate, providing alternatives and risk mitigating solutions.
• Support, coach and mentor ICD team colleagues, contributing to a strong and supportive team environment.
• Work collegiately with all stakeholders across divisions and jurisdictions, building a network of trusted relationships. Work closely with the Business and attend meetings with them on transactions, providing clarity and strong guidance and direction on risk appetite.
• Active involvement in term sheet, loan documentation and ISDA/CSA review and discussions with Business stakeholders, influencing where appropriate content and credit terms, ensuring these are acceptable from a risk and commercial standpoint.
• Proactively keep track of the various sector developments and monitor allocated portfolio and clients from a client specific as well as a sector and country perspective, and where issues are identified, flagging these with relevant Business and ICD stakeholders. Formulate mitigating actions where material risk issues arise.
• Support new initiatives by the Business providing guidance from a risk perspective. Involvement where appropriate in the development of credit and policy guidelines and participation and support on assigned projects including contribution to change initiatives to drive efficiencies.
• Involvement in various initiatives and projects including change of policies, procedures liaising with relevant stakeholders in the Region and also in Tokyo Head Office.

Job Requirements:

• At least 7 years of corporate credit experience within the banking/financial institution industry
• Experience in the analysis and documentation of taditional lending, trade finance, structured transactions and traded products, including derivatives and securities financing transactions.
• Experience in risk analysis and formulating recommendations on credit proposals across a broad range of client types, including corporates, across a number of jurisdictions in Asia and/or Oceania.
• Experience in assessing M&A and leveraged finance will be viewed favourably, as well as experience in dealing with deteriorating and/or impaired loans.
• Good understanding of different sector risk dynamics, drivers and fundamentals, with an ability to apply this in the analysis of counterparty success factors and business and financial risks.
• Strong track record of working closely with Business partners, building trust and adding value by providing clear and early advice on risk appetite, due diligence requirements and structuring, and finding solutions to risk issues.
• Track record of providing a contribution beyond business as usual credit risk management, including around credit portfolio reporting, deep dive analysis, contribution to policy, ideas for improvement, special projects, etc.
• Evidencing a strong graduate or post graduate academic record.
