About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our interdisciplinary team addressing critical issues in advancing sketch prototype concept creation using Large Multimodal Models (LMMs). This role involves contributing to a groundbreaking project aimed at developing and studying novel means of interaction with state of the art LMMs that the research team will develop.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop, refine, and deploy our sketching application
• Collect and analyse data from the prototype
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to integrate LMMs into the sketching application.
• Help conduct empirical research, including designing studies, recruiting participants, and managing experimental data.
• Contribute to the design and development of interaction techniques for novel human-AI interactions.
• Support the team in writing research proposals, progress reports, and academic papers.

In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in the institution. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in department, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in the institution.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and teach labs & practice modules.
• Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP).
• Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry.
• Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research.
• Ensure safety in labs.

Job Requirements

• A good degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Masters, PhD and/or relevant professional certifications like registered PE would be advantageous.
• Deep technical specialist with 10 or more years of working experience in mechanical design, systems design and integration or related area in mechatronics would be preferred.
• Experience in following areas are highly desirable:

1. Complex Mechanical systems development and integration
2. Material and components selection including working knowledge with integration and selection of components/systems such as actuators, pumps, hydraulics system, PLC/Controls systems
3. CAD software such as SolidWorks
4. Simulation such as Finite element and CFD simulation
5. Hands-on prototyping and fabrication skills to guide students in labs
6. Material testing and material properties
7. Programming of Control and PLC systems
8. Software such as Ansys and Abaqus

• Extensive hands-on experience and knowledge of industry practices and engineering principles to bring industry perspective to the University.
• Keen interest in innovation projects, with demonstrated ability in developing solutions to technical problems.
• Strong supervisory skills and enjoy working closely with students in an educational environment.
• Demonstrate proficiency to keep abreast of development in the field and pursue professional certification programs. Possess industrial certifications in relevant areas will be an added advantage.
