Role Purpose
This is an opportunity for a Senior Associate to join our growing Finance team and be part of a full-service global business law firm. As part of our team you will be able to develop and hone your skills and experience as a top class Projects lawyer in our leading national and international Finance practice.
Our global Finance practice advises some of the largest energy and natural resource companies, institutions and government on both their day-to-day operations and wider strategic objectives. Uncertain economies demand legal strategies that address regulatory and enforcement risks and the costs of compliance. Our lawyers help our clients contend with these legal issues - including regulatory demands and the compliance costs that have come with reform.
This role provides critical support and advice to the Partner who specialises in working with governments to navigate complex bilateral issues of national and international significance. Our lawyers understand the commercial, strategic, technical, geographical, and political factors that shape and impact the industries we work across, as well as the business issues and risks inherent when working in specialist sectors. Our market leading presence also allows us first-hand access to contacts, sponsors, and key decision makers worldwide.
DLA Piper’s global Finance practice advises on all aspects of financing, across borders, sectors and financial products. With one of the largest teams of dedicated finance lawyers in the world and an established local law firm network, we help our clients to realise their financial strategies in whichever markets they do business. Our clients include the full range of market participants, whom we often support on first-of-a-kind deals and in new markets. We share knowledge and skills in deals involving, for example, lending and borrowing, debt securities, derivatives, funds, portfolios and FinTech solutions, as well as energy, infrastructure and other projects.
Key areas of responsibility
You will deliver exceptional results to clients by advising on:
- Advise governments on public international law matters and dispute resolution on complex issues.
- Handle transactional matters and dispute resolution, working on cross-border issues with international teams on novel, high-profile matters.
- Provide holistic end-to-end advice on various legal matters.
- Focus on climate change, maritime boundary delimitation, and economic diversification strategies.
- Advise governments on climate finance projects, particularly supporting ocean-related initiatives.
- Navigate the complexities of balancing domestic and international political and geopolitical considerations, and diplomacy.
- Lead multi-jurisdictional teams, collaborating with international experts, counsel, and colleagues.
- Connect clients to the best advisors in your network.
Skills, experience and characteristics
The ideal candidate will:
- Be confident to draft documents using a commercial, client focussed style
- Have knowledge and understanding of how best to utilise information and research resources
- Have commercial awareness and understanding of current key legal and business issues, with a working knowledge of special economic zones (SEZ) an advantage
- Have excellent skills in communication, client relations, and team-working
- Work co-operatively and collaboratively in a team, sharing information and knowledge
- Be professional and focussed on delivering a quality service, executed in a timely manner, responding effectively to requests from internal and external clients
- Manage time effectively and efficiently
- Comply with professional standards and all relevant regulatory obligations
- Have the ability to develop an effective network of internal and external contacts and the ability to identify ways to contribute collaboratively to the development of the team’s relationships with clients.

DLA Piper has experienced lawyers who focus on a diverse range of major projects including a well established Energy and Natural Resources practice with a focus on conventional energy, renewables (waste to energy, battery storage, solar PV, wind, biomass, micro-grids, and pumped hydro), oil and gas, hydrogen, and natural resources.
The team also specialise in special economic zones, guiding governments about appeal process and securing foreign investment.
