The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a University Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University Singapore that conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. Computational resources are available through a dedicated cluster and collaboration with the High-Performance Computing Centre of NTU. In addition, EOS hosts state-of-the-art analytical facilities for petrological and geochemical analysis, and a Community Engagement office that co-creates learning opportunities for a range of audiences to promote a safer and more sustainable future.

EOS is looking for ambitious, highly motivated Research Fellow (post-doctoral scholar). The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof Adam Switzer to investigate various approaches to future tropical cyclone prediction in the Asia Pacific and apply novel statistical techniques to enable policymakers and planners to understand plausible worst-case scenarios with the rising sea-level and changing climate. We're looking for a collaborative individual with a passion for learning, who would enjoy working with people from a wide range of disciplines, with a goal to connecting the dots between the components.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct computer simulations by modelling components of sea-level rise, cyclogenesis and their inter-dependencies.
• Interface with climate modeling experts and insurance industry partners on the relevant data for modeling and analysis of future cyclone risk.
• Manage, analyse, and interpret complex datasets, employing the latest methodologies and tools for accurate and efficient data processing.
• Engage in close collaboration with experts across diverse disciplines, integrating various datasets to enhance the understanding on scientific prediction of sea-level rise.
• Develop key case studies that can inform and support policy decisions, emphasizing practical applications of research findings in risk management and mitigation strategies.
• Prepare research outputs in formats accessible to policymakers, risk stakeholders, and the broader community, ensuring clear and effective communication of complex scientific information.
• Present, publish, and communicate research results in scientific meetings, scholarly journals, and other relevant platforms, contributing to the broader scientific discourse.
• Provide guidance and support to junior team members, students, and research assistants, fostering an environment of learning and professional growth.

Job Requirements:

• Ph.D. in Coastal Engineering, Climate Science, or another related field.
• Post-doctoral experience is an advantage.
• Strong fundamentals of climate variability and change, geoscience and atmospheric science, physical oceanography, and meteorological observations.
• Expertise and interests in climate modelling, data analysis, and statistical methods.
• Track record of publishing research relevant to the position in international recognised journals.
• Evidence of excellent communication skills.
• Evidence of independence in research direction and team spirit.

Responsibilities

• Oversee projects from inception to completion, ensuring work is completed on time and within budget.
• Formulation of procurement strategy, preparation of tender documentation, preparation of cost reports and cost plans, administration of the tender process, evaluation of tenders, and submission of tender recommendation reports.
