We are looking to appoint a full-time Research Associate (History) at the School of Humanities in Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

The incumbent will be part of one of a collaborative team of researchers based in NTU’s History Department working on the history of environmental crises and epidemics in colonial Hong Kong led by Assistant Professor Florence Mok. The Research Associate will focus on examining how transnational networks which linked Hong Kong and other places, especially Southeast Asia, affected the development of the Cold War, which in turn influenced state’s response to different kinds of crises, political and natural.

The fellowship position is a fixed term post for 12 months, with a possibility of further extension.

About the Project

This study will make an original contribution to the political, social and environmental history of modern Asia, British colonialism and the Cold War by exploring how the colonial government and the Chinese society in Hong Kong mitigated environmental crises from 1945 to 1980, with the Cold War in the background. This is a period of historical significance: it witnessed growing policy initiatives, increased economic affluence and rising political and social consciousness. It will focus on how the state and popular responses to water shortages, in particular propaganda, were influenced by Cold War politics. The proposed study will use a traditional historical approach of examining published sources and archival manuscripts in Hong Kong and London.

Key Responsibilities:

• Examine the data collected from the Hong Kong Public Records Offices and the National Archives at Kew.
• Carry out literature survey on Hong Kong history and different theories, in particular work Cold War networks between Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, different forms of propaganda and approaches of crisis management.
• Coordinate with the History Research Fellow, the History Associate and PI, apply theoretical frameworks to the historical/archival findings.
• Use both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyse the effectiveness of the crisis management measures implemented by the colonial government in Hong Kong.

Research Assistant/Associate, Environmental Science

We are looking for a highly motivated, independent and adventurous Research Associate/Assistant to coordinate research activities in Brunei and Singapore. This role involves coordinating the instrumentation of a 65-meter tower in a pristine peat swamp forest will micrometeorological sensors to monitor water vapor, carbon dioxide and methane exchange at the ecosystem scale. We hypothesize that, given its undisturbed state and the thick peat layer, this peatland functions as a net carbon sink. Validating this hypothesis would provide novel evidence of active carbon removal from pristine peatlands in Southeast Asia.

This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in field-based research within a pristine tropical peat swamp forest. The role involves periods spent outdoors, where living and working conditions are basic. Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate and participate to field trips activities related to the installation and ongoing maintenance of the micrometeorological eddy covariance tower.
• Oversee the procurement of sensors and equipment, managing inventory to ensure all supplies are ready for fieldwork.
• Collect, process, and analyze eddy covariance data using EddyPro, focusing on data quality and initial interpretation.
• Perform regular maintenance and troubleshooting of sensors and data systems to maintain data quality and continuity.
• Train field staff on equipment basics, document protocols, and prepare technical reports to support current and future research activities.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, meteorology, engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with the installation, calibration, and deployment of environmental monitoring equipment. Prior fieldwork experience, particularly in remote or tropical ecosystems is advantageous.
• Ability to work independently and proactively solve problems under challenging conditions.
• Strong organizational skills to effectively manage field activities, logistics, and team coordination.
• Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R, Python).

The position requires analyzing productivity, implementing plans for peak operational efficiency, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Responsibilities extend to inspecting and maintaining equipment, coordinating product transportation, managing driver communication, and overseeing imports, trucking, and inspections by SFA. The role also focuses on training and managing the warehouse team, reviewing workflows, ensuring adherence to safety SOPs, and maintaining stock security. Qualifications:
