Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Fellow to join our dynamic research team focusing on designing, adapting, and implementing cutting-edge mechanical and electronic systems for a decentralized food manufacturing model. As part of the Proteins4Singapore project, this role involves on utilizing simulations and advanced control systems to optimize and ensure quality in novel food textures and forms. This position plays a critical role in advancing sustainable protein solutions for urban environments through interdisciplinary collaboration, drawing expertise from mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and food engineering. This is a 1-year contract with the possibility of extension after the first year.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop a closed-loop control system to synchronize high-moisture extrusion and shape manipulator systems with a seamless integration and quality assurance.
• Integrate a variety of non-invasive sensors for a continuous and active monitoring on a food shape manipulator system.
• Develop and adapt custom firmware to integrate extrusion, in-line monitoring and control system with software protocols.

Key Competencies

The Asia Research Institute invites outstanding, active researchers from around the world to work on an important piece of Asia-centred research in the social sciences or humanities.

Apart from the quality of the research proposal, and the applicant’s publication track record, positions will be awarded on the basis of the relationship of their research topic to the identified priorities and themes of the cluster.

The Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Cluster concentrates on the relationship between those three domains in and beyond Asian settings, and their intersections with the environment in the past, present and future.

The cluster currently brings together a diverse, interdisciplinary group of researchers who work on the following research themes:

i) climate change and carbon governance;

ii) planetary health and ‘Asian medicines’;

iii) energy transitions, infrastructure and space;

iv) critical minerals.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Researcher will work under the supervision of the Cluster Leader and take the lead in duties such as organising workshops and conferences, participating in current cluster projects, and carrying out new projects (including applying for grant funding). We are seeking to recruit a proactive and motivated research assistant to join the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at the National University of Singapore (NUS) launched on 5 September 2024, the first of its kind in Asia to advance research in alternative proteins. Led by experts from NUS and research institutes in Singapore, the Centre aims to drive global food security and accelerate regional innovation. The focus will be on microalgae research and biomass fermentation, to produce high-quality, affordable, and sustainable microbial proteins from microalgae and biomass fermentation that can be further developed into cultured meat and plant-based protein hybrids. Microbial proteins will be cultivated through fermentation and processed using emerging bio-physical techniques for effective biotransformation, to improve digestibility, flavour, and nutritional profile. As a research assistant, you will assist with conducting and monitoring microalgal cultivation bioprocesses via analytical techniques to achieve maximal product titres, yields, and rates. You will also assist with processing the microbial proteins for optimal digestibility, flavour, and nutritional profiles. The candidate will work closely with postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers. Appointments will be initially made on a 1-year contract, renewable for up to 5 years.

Job Description

This project will study and propose feasible solution to retrofit existing coastal protection structures. Special feature of this proposed solution is that it must be able to reduce seawater seepage, using innovative way of impervious material. The solution must also be modular in nature, such that it can be stack onto the existing seawall or the previously installed layer.

This research fellow will help the PI and Co-PI in overseeing the project in general and help in drafting the reports. In particular, he/she is responsible for
• design and executive of centrifuge testing in this project.
• Design a wave generation inflight in centrifuge model.
• Model the impermeability of the new proposed modules, and its connection with the existing seawall.
• Data interpretation and summary the laboratory tests, arrive at some key findings on the future design.

PURPOSE

Provision of care for patients undergoing radiation treatment and takes up clinical responsibilities while keeping with functional duties within the centre.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides good practical skills and to lead a team of patient care assistants and health attendants in area assigned to.

2. Provides good individual patient care and services with regards to specific nursing competencies such as doing dressings and cannulating patients.

3. Displays confidence and well-versed in briefing patients prior to all radiation therapy procedures such as consultation, CT simulation, radiation therapy treatment and post treatment.

4. Displays competency in providing timely nursing advice to patients and family members.

5. Assist radiation oncologists in consultations and be competent in necessary procedures.

6. Offers good teamwork and be part of a radiotherapy team in the deliverance of safe and accurate support of treatment to patients within the radiotherapy department.

7. Maintain and upkeep equipment and supplies such as emergency trolley, oxygen cylinders, surgical supplies, stationery and blankets.

8. Ensure that high alert medications are properly stocked and stored.

9. Maintain and upkeep cleanliness of the consultation rooms and work areas.

10. Be knowledgeable in disposal of all matters of waste including sharps, biohazard waste and general waste.

11. Contributes actively in the improvement and upgrading of holistic treatment care.

GENERAL

1. Liaise with department manager, radiation oncologists, therapists and other relevant staff to facilitate ongoing departmental processes such as patient scheduling and inpatient status.

2. Manages and keeps track of patients’ laboratory and imaging studies results.

3. Provides proper guidance to junior personnel assigned.

4. Discharges any other duties as assigned by supervisors and/or senior manager.

5. Participates in continuing education, improvement and other activities of the department.

6. Adheres to the Code of Practice with regards to Nursing Board at all times.
