We are the University of Cambridge’s presence in Singapore, Cambridge CARES. Our activities are sponsored by the National Research Foundation’s CREATE programme. Our first research programme, Cambridge Centre for Carbon Reduction in Chemical Technology (C4T), is a collaboration between University of Cambridge, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking to fill research positions in maritime decarbonisation modelling:

1) In the first, Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations of ammonia and methanol engines will be performed, leading to a better understanding of the pollutant-generation processes. In addition to excelling in handling turbulent combustion theory Extensive, experience in combustion CFD is necessary.

2) In the second, systems modelling of alternative fuels and application to real-world data from ship operations will be performed, to compare possible decarbonisation scenarios in view of realistic ship operations. A thorough understanding of lifecycle analysis, energy system modelling, and Techno-economic analysis is needed. The ability to program in languages such as Python programming would be a plus.

What skills will you need?

All positions require a PhD or equivalent research experience in a combustion topic relevant to the above areas, strong motivation to work in a multi-national collaborative team, and extensive experience with report writing, journal publications, and presentations to academic and industrial settings. CARES is leading a new project “Sustainable Manufacture of Molecules and Materials (SM3)”, funded by NRF CREATE programme within the Decarbonisation Grand Challenge. SM3 project is a collaboration with NTU, NUS, CARES & the University of Cambridge and EPFL. The broad aim of the project is to develop novel approaches and technologies for fully de-fossilised routes to complex functional molecules and molecular materials. The project will explore novel chemical transformations for conversion of net-zero feedstocks to building blocks typically used in pharma, agrochem and other end applications. The project will also explore novel synthetic methods for conversion of the building blocks into end-use functional molecules. Novel synthesis technologies (photoelectrochemistry, sonochemistry, mechanochemistry, etc), as well as advanced research methods (AI, chemoinformatics, high-throughput synthesis) and process metrics (LCA and technoeconomic analysis) are included in this large project.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking to fill a vacancy of a Research Fellow or a Senior Research Fellow with experience in techno-economics and object-oriented programming. The candidate would have experience in assessing engineering reports and scientific papers on novel synthesis technologies, extracting key process performance parameters. The successful candidate would also have experience in designing and performing simple experimental work in the broad area of process and reaction engineering.

The project:

In the context of the multi-partner project HYCOMBS (https://www.cares.cam.ac.uk/research/hycombs/), which is part of Singapore’s CREATE investment in Decarbonisation (https://www.nrf.gov.sg/files/Media_Release_CREATE_Decarbonisation_Challenge_with_ANNEX_A__B_final.pdf), a large number of positions have become available to research hydrogen and ammonia combustion.

The project is a collaborative effort between CARES, CNRS, NTU, NUS, NTNU (National Technical University of Norway) and Tohoku University (Japan). All the positions are held in Singapore and will normally last 2 years in the first instance, with the possibility to extend if funding is available. The successful candidate will be working under the academic supervision of one of the project’s partners depending on the particular skills and interests of the researcher. Short stays in Japan, France and Norway for working in the partner laboratories are envisaged for some of these positions. Who are we looking for?

We are seeking highly motivated combustion researchers to work in the following areas:

1) Kinetics: (i) Experiments with flow reactors and laminar flames. The successful applicant will be skilled in analytical combustion chemistry systems such as gas chromatography and laser detection; (ii) Development of detailed and reduced chemical mechanisms. Experience in combustion chemistry modelling is needed.

2) Laminar and turbulent flame fundamentals: (i) Experiments with laminar pulsed and turbulent swirl flames. Skills in flame rig design, laser diagnostics and optical methods for flames are needed. (ii) Modelling with combustion Computational Fluid Dynamics (DNS, LES), with experience in the fundamentals of turbulent combustion, CFD and massively-parallel computations.

3) High-pressure combustion: Experiments and simulations for reciprocating engines and gas turbines. For the experimental positions, the successful candidate must be skilled in optical diagnostics, engine combustion, swirl combustion, fluids handling and data analysis. For the modelling positions, experience in CFD of engines or gas turbine combustors is a prerequisite.

4) Detonations and ignition risk analysis with CFD. The position involves high-order CFD methods for capturing detonations and turbulent flow analysis for ignition. The successful candidate must be experienced with CFD.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Final year Ph.D or recent Ph.D graduates in Computer Science, engineering or quantitative field. Computer, Electronics, Mathematics and other related majors.

- Have in-depth research in one or more fields such as computer vision, multimodal, AIGC, machine learning, rendering generation, etc..

- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; Ability to solve large model training and application problems; Ability to explore solutions independently.

- With good communication and collaboration skills, proactive work, able to harmoniously cooperate with the team to explore new technologies and promote technological progress.

Preferred Qualifications:

- With excellent basic algorithms, solid foundation of machine learning, familiar with CV, AIGC, NLP, RL, ML and other fields of technology, CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGGRAPH or SIGGRAPH Asia and other top conferences/journals published papers are preferred.

Research Officer positions are available soon in the Computational Digital Pathology Lab (CDPL) at the Bioinformatics Institute (BII), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore. The AI-based Digital Pathology (AIDP) Program aims to develop and validate advanced AI solutions, image processing, computer vision, and mathematical modelling for the pathological diagnosis and prognosis of cancer using digitized pathology slides, including both biopsy and whole standard slides.

The innovative AI-based Digital Pathology Diagnosis (AIDP) programme is a pioneering venture set to transform the landscape of AI pathological diagnosis and solve the global shortage of pathologists and increasing cancer cases with cutting-edge AI technologies. Our focus is on bridging gaps in data quality, model generalizability and market scalability. This groundbreaking initiative aims to advance pathology practices by developing artificial intelligence systems that accurately diagnoses cancer and other diseases from digital pathology images. Specific Technical Requirements:

• Proficiency in one or more programming languages: Matlab, C/C++, Java, or Python, etc.
• Extensive knowledge, experience, and expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, pattern recognition, and digital image processing techniques.
• Practical coding skills in implementing numerical computational algorithms.
• Strong analytical and logical thinking skills to address and solve complex scientific problems.
• Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar.
• Basic knowledge of cell biology or pathology is an added advantage.
• Ability to learn quickly and integrate knowledge across multiple disciplines.
• Experience or willingness to engage in collaborations with hospitals and clinical settings.
• Capability to present research findings effectively at both internal and external seminars and conferences.
• Strong writing skills for both technical reports and scientific papers.

General Requirements:

• Highly motivated researcher with an bachelor or master degree, eager to pursue a scientific career, particularly with a passion for artificial intelligence, machine vision, computer vision and biological image processing projects.
• Independent thinker with a strong passion for advancing the field of AI and biological image processing in clinical diagnosis.
• Excellent team player capable of conducting independent research under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI) and collaborating effectively with lab members.
• Solid general knowledge and understanding of scientific and engineering principles.
• Exceptional scientific and technical writing skills, coupled with outstanding communication abilities.
• Previous experience in medical image analysis projects, whether in an industrial or academic setting, is a plus but not mandatory.
