HYCOMBS: Hydrogen and Ammonia Combustion in Singapore

In the future, Singapore may be importing renewable energy in the form of hydrogen (H2) or ammonia (NH3). These zero-carbon fuels will require the development of new gas turbines (GTs) and internal combustion engines (ICE) used in power generation, aviation, and maritime propulsion.

This project focuses on the combustion fundamentals of hydrogen, ammonia, their blends, and their blends with hydrocarbon fuels. The knowledge acquired in HYCOMBS will enable the penetration of zero-carbon fuels in the Singapore energy system and this will benefit Singaporean industries and residents.

DESCRIPTION

In the WP2 of HYCOMBS project, the objective is to improve the knowledge and understanding of flames with non-conventional fuels to improve CFD model. Turbulent-combustion interaction for NH3/air, NH3/CH4/air, NH3/H2/air mixtures remains not well understood and few data are currently available [1-3].

The objective of this post-doc position is to provide accurate experimental data base highly resolved in space and time to study the fundamental of combustion using various NH3, H2 and CH4 blends and to help CFD model development. These tests will be conducted in a spherical combustion chamber with isotropic and homogeneous turbulence at different initial thermodynamics conditions, i.e. temperature and pressure with different types of mixture [4]. In a first part several optical diagnostics will be implemented and evaluated in order to deeply study flame propagation and flame/turbulence interactions such as: PIV, 3D Mie-Scattering tomography as in [5], OH* PLIF, etc. Main part of the work will consist of the data analysis to characterize the interaction. The database will be done and discussed with the others partners of fundamental combustion tasks, and especially CARES team.

Our lab is focused on leveraging new technologies to better study microbial populations and their impact on human health. We have extensive experience in metagenomic analysis in clinically or commercially important contexts such as uncovering distinct microbial communities in households affected by paediatric eczema (PMID: 35318044) and revealing the microbial basis of body odour in teenagers (PMID: 30497517). We are now focusing on applying various -omics capabilities to larger sized disease cohorts to understand how microbial pathways and biomarkers change with disease progression and treatment. The successful candidate will work with Professor Barbaros Oezyilmaz under a project on Spin triplet superconductivity in van der Waals heterostructures.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Physics, Material Science, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, or related disciplines and strong background in low-temperature device physics. The successful candidate will be working in state-of-the-art research environment and receive internationally competitive salary packages.

Our group has extensive experience in the fabrication and characterization of van der Waals heterostructures based on magnetic and superconducting layered materials. To support our ongoing work, we are looking for a new team member with extensive experience in low-temperature magneto-transport measurements. The candidate is expected to do research on spin triplet generation and characterization by introducing an additional layer of a magnetic semiconductor into existing heterostructures to realize spin mixing.

The main responsibilities of the position include:

1. Design and development of magnetic tunnel junction or spin valve.

Senior Testing Engineer

As part of IME’s Photonics & Sensors Department, the candidate will take lead for the development of various testing capability for advanced photonics, including but not limited to chip-level and wafer-level testing of optical devices and electro-optical devices. You will work closely with an excellent multidisciplinary team working on advanced photonics.

Responsibilities:

• Develop various photonics testing capabilities for both chips and wafers, including design and building of measurement setups
