This programme represents a new and timely collaboration between the United Kingdom and Singapore and will be based at Imperial Global Singapore (IGS) offices, located on the campus of the National University of Singapore. This senior role will be responsible for leading the coordination of the NH3-SOFC research team, working across materials science, device engineering, electrochemistry, and in collaboration with the Programme Co-Directors based at both IGS and Nanyang Technological University.

The programme aims to develop solid oxide fuel cells that can effectively and efficiently use ammonia directly as a fuel source while maintaining high performance and durability. To overcome challenges related to material compatibility, anode degradation due to nitrification, slow chemical/electrochemical processes, and performance loss, the research will explore new materials, catalysts, and cell designs. There will be two cell types of interest in this programme: i) oxygen-ion and ii) proton-conducting ceramic membrane electrolytes. The project will span the length scales, from materials discovery, including with computational approaches, through mechanical properties and microstructure optimisation to incorporation into short stacks for durability testing.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop new technologies for molecular and immunological assays.
• Integrate assays into prototype medical devices.
• Handle ordering and payment using the SAP system.
• Ensure that all assays and processes meet stringent quality standards and regulatory requirements.
• Analyze experimental data to draw meaningful conclusions and make recommendations for further research.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, production, and quality assurance, to ensure seamless integration of new technologies.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
• Identify areas for process improvement and implement changes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
• Any other ad-hoc duties as assigned.

Job Description:

We are seeking a Research Scientist with 2-3 years of post-PhD experience in materials science and engineering, with expertise in electrochemical processes for surface treatments and coatings. Preferences will be given to candidates with experience in semiconductor equipment component manufacturing, MRO and refreshment processes, including stripping, coating, and high-purity cleaning. This role requires a deep understanding of advanced surface treatment processes and characterisation techniques to support the durability and functionality of components in demanding environments.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

• PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Electrochemistry, or a related field with 2-3 years of postdoctoral or industrial experience in electrochemical surface treatments and coatings.
• Preferred experience in semiconductor equipment component manufacturing/MRO/refreshment, particularly in processes such as stripping, coating, and ultra-high purity cleaning.
• Expertise in electrochemical surface treatments, including electrochemical etching/polishing, passivation, conversion coating, anodizing, and plasma electrolytic oxidation/polishing.
• Strong knowledge of advanced coating processes, such as electroless plating, electroplating, and familiarity with their applications in high-purity environments.
• Proficiency in surface and coating characterization techniques, including SEM, XRD, AFM, XPS, and EDX.
• Strong analytical skills and experience designing experiments, analysing data, and optimizing processes for high-performance coatings.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience in high-tech or semiconductor industries, where ultra-high purity standards are critical.
• Knowledge of regulatory and quality standards for semiconductor industries.
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills for producing reports and presenting findings to diverse audiences.
• Experience scaling surface treatment and coating processes from lab to production.

Job Requirements:
