Project Introduction:

Transition-metal catalyzed carbon-heteroatom strategies for the generation of selective carbon-nitrogen, carbon-sulfur and carbon-oxygen bonds has emerged as a versatile strategy for chemical synthesis. In particular, the intense demand for these strategies has been driven by its applications in producing key intermediates which are prevalent building blocks for the construction of many natural products and pharmaceuticals. Many of the existing protocols for performing this type of transformation have been accomplished using toxic and expensive transition metals such as palladium, nickel, rhodium and ruthenium metal catalysts. In most instances, the catalysts are easily rendered ineffective unless carried out under stringent inert conditions and anhydrous solvents. Generally, the catalytic systems based on such transition metals are perceived as expensive methodologies with higher toxicity.

Despite advances made in carbon-heteroatom bonds formation reactions, there is still a pertinent need to develop new protocols that are less toxic, sustainable, and experimentally simple. In this project, we aim to address this challenge by applying more environmentally benign metal salts as catalysts for carbon-heteroatom bonds formation reactions.

The applicant will collaborate with Research Prof. Itai Arad in the intersection of complexity theory, quantum information and quantum foundations. The job will include studying problems related to the quantum PCP conjecture. We are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual with a passion in cancer genomics, biology, and radiation research to join the Tan Chin Tuan Laboratory of Optical Imaging, Photodynamic, and Proton Therapy - Precision Radiation Oncology Programme (PROP). The scope of the projects conducted under the premise of PROP includes 1) early- and late-phase clinical trials; 2) cancer genomics and data science; and 3) translational cancer and radiation biology. For this role, you will be mainly working with the Principal Investigator (PI) and the research teams under Theme 2. The projects involve studying cancer genomics of two main cancers, nasopharyngeal and prostate cancer, and the mechanistic pathways involved or identification of novel biomarkers for radioresistance. Samples from consented patients will be used for next-generation sequencing and/or microarray to generate “big data” for further analysis by our data scientists. Having witnessed the achievements of the large models in 2023, there has been a new surge of machine learning and AI models in recent days, which again puts up the public concerns about the explosively increasing energy consumption during the model training phase. According to Dr. Sajjad Moazeni, an AI researcher at University of Washington, the training of GPT-3 roughly consumes 10 gigawatt-hour of electricity ^([1]), approximately equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of 440,000 average Singapore households in 2021 ^([2]).

Significant efforts have been devoted to improving the efficiency of the model training phase, in terms of hardware, model architecture, networking, and algorithm design, etc. The PI (Dr. Zhang Junyu) of this project would like to tackle this problem from the algorithmic perspective, by developing theoretical understanding of the open questions on the training algorithms, in terms of the convergence, complexity, local landscape properties, and potential algorithmic improvement based on the new theoretical findings.

• Support local and international partnerships relevant to Fellowships, work with Senior Programme Manager and Senior Business Development Manager on maintaining relevant partnerships
• Support the preparation of partnership agreements and contracts
• Interface with relevant Corporate Group Services e.g. procurement
• Support curriculum development for SB?s training initiatives relevant to Fellowships
• Support budget management and work with Finance to monitor financial movements of SB?s budget
• Support SB training initiatives

Qualifications:

• At least a Bachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering
• At least 3 years of experience in industry/ research/ healthcare clusters
• Experience with project or programme management
• Proficient in MS office (Microsoft Project, Word, Powerpoint and Excel)

Requirements:

The Research Fellow will be responsible for working closely with the Principal Investigator on one or more research projects. In particular, the research fellow is going to investigate the design of novel database systems on modern hardware (e.g., GPUs and/or Non-volatile memory) and data science applications.
