[What the role is]

The Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) is a division of the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS). At CCRS, our mission is to advance scientific understanding of tropical climate variability and change and its associated weather systems affecting Singapore and the wider Southeast Asia region, so that the knowledge and expertise can benefit decision makers and the community. Our vision is to be a world leading centre in tropical climate and weather research focussing on the Southeast Asia region.

Within CCRS, the Department of Weather Research (DWR) leads the research and development (R&D) of our core tropical, convective-scale ‘SINGV’ modelling system for both weather and climate change applications. DWR also undertakes R&D and oversees the transition to operations of SINGV-based local numerical weather prediction (NWP), marine and haze/air quality forecasting with lead times up to a week ahead. The DWR works closely with CCRS’s Department of Climate Research (DCR) and High Performance Computing (HPC) Branch, MSS forecasters, local universities, and a number of international organisations including the UK Met Office, Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and US National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The DWR/NWP branch is responsible for developing and improving nowcasting and regional NWP systems, and translating the outputs into customised products for supporting MSS weather services and other stakeholders. The branch also works closely with local agencies, institutes of higher learning and UM partners to share research outcomes and deliver improved forecast products for the region.

Rainfall nowcasting is a key R&D area at CCRS to provide timely and actionable very-short-range (<1hr) heavy rainfall warnings to the general public and government agencies. This position will work closely with partners including PUB (Singapore’s National Water Agency), the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and local research institutes to contribute to CCRS’ NWP efforts through improving radar data quality control and signal processing, development of rainfall nowcasting systems and transition of research outcomes to operations.

The Department of English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore (NUS) is recruiting ONE Research Fellow to work on a Social Science and Humanities Research (SSHR) Fellowship project, “Archipelagic Mappings and Performance Routes, Routers, and Networks (1840–1940),” directed by the Principal Investigator (PI), Assistant Professor Alvin Eng Hui Lim. The position will be based in Singapore with an intended start date of August 2024 for a period of two years.

The SSHR Fellowship-funded project seeks to study early waves of interculturalism and performance-making during the colonial period and identify obvious gaps in research on the theatrical networks and performance routes of the nineteenth century to early twentieth century. The project will theorise and document the circulation and travels of theatre, dance, and performance against the backdrop of colonial expansion, territorialisation, cultural diplomacy, trade, and technological development between 1840 to 1940. By situating Singapore as a significant node, the study will trace the networks that existed between urban centres, port cities, and the sea routes (namely, along the Malacca and Singapore Straits and diverging across Australia, Hong Kong and the Southern provinces of China, to name a few) that performance practices and performers travelled on as they embarked and disembarked, evolved, or took root across places in the region. These networks will be visualised and narrated through storymaps and digital scholarship, ensuring that the histories of individual traditions are not told in isolation but interwoven into a connected history of performance-making in the region.

The successful applicant will be offered a contract of 24 months from the date of hire. S/he will receive an attractive monthly remuneration depending on experience and qualifications. The Singapore Centre on Environmetnal Life Science Engineering (SCELSE), a Research Centre of Excellence, National University of Singapore, is looking for a Research Assistant for the project on biofilms in urban waterways. We seek a highly motivated and organized applicant with a background in life sciences and/or molecular biology, and preferably with experience working with environmental microbiomes. The position is within a multi-disciplinary research team which broadly pursues microbial diversity and physiological investigations in urban waterways. The full-time Research Assistant will be expected to participate in ongoing research projects and oversee daily operation of the lab and procurement for the team. Projects in the lab utilize the following techniques: field water and sediment sampling, next-generation sequencing and genotyping, microscopy, flow cytometry, advanced computations and cell sorting and metabolomics, analytical instruments such as Inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and Ion Chromatography (IC). A component of the job will also include assisting and conducting field work from locations around Singapore.
