Project Overview

We are seeking a Research Engineer to systematically organize knowledge for a project on “Designing human-AI teams.” The project is part of a five-year research program on "Mens, Manus and Machina—How AI Empowers People, Institutions and Cities in Singapore (M3S)."

Successful applicants for this position will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary project that aims to dramatically rethink how people and AI systems will work together in the future. To do this, the project seeks to build a strong scientific foundation for how AI can augment (as opposed to replace) humans.

An important goal of the project is to develop a rich ontology of activities that can be performed by human-AI teams. Like categorizing the plants and animals on a little-explored continent, the work will involve cataloging many (a) activities and (b) possible human-computer processes for performing these activities.

To do this, we will develop knowledge graphs that include (1) descriptions of many different types of activities and processes, and (2) classifications of these descriptions into multi-dimensional taxonomies that range from very general types of activities to very specific ones.

These knowledge graphs will then be used to automatically generate promising ways of combining humans and AI systems to perform different tasks. In the long run, we believe these tools will help rapidly (a) identify use cases for new AI capabilities, (b) specify effective processes and task allocations to humans and computers in a given situation, and (c) identify innovative ways to combine people and AI to solve business and societal problems.\

To join this team, we are looking for a candidate who will be in charge of enzyme engineering activities using state-of-the-art evolutionary engineering and computational enzyme design techniques. The candidate will be involved in the development of screening protocols, construction and screening of enzyme libraries, designed by in silico molecular modelling. These enzymes will be further used for the creation of novel metabolic pathways for terpenoid production in engineered bacterial strains.

Job Description

As a Research Assistant in Urban Planning Algorithms, you will be responsible for developing innovative algorithms and formulations to address complex urban planning problems. You will work closely with urban planners, data scientists, and other stakeholders to understand the practical constraints and challenges faced in urban planning. Your role will involve:

• Developing and refining algorithms and mathematical formulations to solve urban planning problems, such as traffic flow optimization, land use allocation, and resource distribution.

• Analyzing and interpreting data from various sources, including geospatial data, demographic information, and transportation networks, to inform algorithm development.

• Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure that algorithms are practical, scalable, and aligned with the goals of urban planners

• Implementing and testing algorithms using appropriate software tools and programming languages, such as Python or R.
• Documenting your work and presenting findings to stakeholders, including urban planners, policymakers, and the public.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to have a strong background in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, with a focus on algorithm development and optimization. Additional qualifications include:

• Proficiency in developing and refining algorithms and mathematical formulations to solve complex problems.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or R, and experience with software tools for algorithm implementation and testing.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and present findings effectively.
• A commitment to collaborative work and the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams.
• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Operations Research, or a related field
