RESPONSIBILITIES

The candidate will be responsible for conducting research on optimizing the processing of multi-modal input (especially a combination of event (neuromorphic) vision sensors and RGB camera sensors) for visual grounding tasks, and for also embedding such optimizations in early prototypes of AI-based systems for text+vision tutoring support (e.g., for geometry learning).

Successful candidate will be part of an active research team led by Prof Archan Misra from School of Computing and Information Systems, Singapore Management University.

The candidate will have the following key duties:

• Develop and implement new algorithms for efficient processing of hybrid RGB & event vision streams to extract semantically relevant sensory data for visual grounding tasks.
• Develop and implement optimizations to DNN inferencing pipelines, including the integration of Spiking Neural Network (SNN) models, to reduce latency of visual grounding AI models without adversely affecting accuracy.

Research Fellow (postdoc) position in the Department of Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering at National University of Singapore (NUS). NGAP PROJECT

N-GAP: Nanophotonic GAtes with exciton-Polaritons

Many technologies and platforms have been suggested to build a quantum computer, including ions, atoms, electrons, and superconducting materials. Among these options, all-integrated photonic platforms that allow creating complex circuitry with a small footprint are very promising.

In N-GAP we will explore and exploit a hybrid state of light and matter, the excitonic polariton, to create a platform for quantum computing. Exciton polaritons, which emerge from the strong-coupling of an exciton and a photon, exhibit Kerr nonlinearities typically three orders of magnitude stronger than that found in standard photonic nonlinear crystals. The main objective of N-GAP is to further enhance the nonlinearity of the polariton systems to achieve the first experimental realisation of a deterministic CNOT gate based on polariton systems, which is the essential building block of a quantum computer.

DESCRIPTION

Transition metal dichalcogenides MX2 materials (where M=Mo or W, and X=Se or S) are one atom thick 2D layers containing heavy elements (e.g. Mo). These two properties render the optical properties of this material family unique, with electronic optically-active excitations that are extremely robust and that dominate their optical response even above room-temperature. Interestingly, the exciton-exciton interaction strength as well as the excitonic fermionic saturation have been measured to be larger than those predicted by the hydrogenic model describing excitons in conventional bulk semiconductors. This explains why just one single monolayer of TMD is able to display an interaction strength comparable to “thick” single and multiquantum wells. Furthermore, in TMDs this interaction strength can be further enhanced by using either Rydberg excitons, which have displayed an almost 5-times enhancement, charged excitons (i.e. trions), which have shown a factor 10 enhancement, or dipolaritons, which are built upon indirect excitons in stacks of TMDs and which have shown a ~10-fold enhancement.

In N-GAP we plan to exploit this enhanced exciton-exciton (or, equivalently, polariton-polariton) interaction strength by integrating TMDs into vertical and horizontal optical microcavities combining large quality factors and reduced mode volumes, as schematically shown in the Figure below. The research fellow will contribute to the optical spectroscopy of the microcavities paying special attention to the assessment of the polariton-polariton interaction strength under different configurations and to the analysis of the quantum properties of light interacting with such microcavities.

Optimizing the performance of health systems is essential to ensuring the wellbeing and longevity of populations worldwide. Singapore is particularly well placed to lead research in this field as its health system has been consistently ranked as one of the best in the world based in independent evaluation with the Global Burden of Disease data. The new Centre for Research in Health Systems Performance (CRiHSP) aims to advance research in this area within the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of the National University of Singapore (NUS) as the leading centre for research in health systems in Asia with the following core functions:

1. Research: empirical and methodological research and evidence synthesis on health systems performance with a particular focus on Value Based Healthcare.

The job is for automated high-throughput experimentation and robotic development, running AI-driven automated worklows for thin film development, electrical and opto-electronic characterization as well as device applications. The RF will be responsible for building a fully automated robotic platform to execute the scientific goals laid out in the project, with multi-layer perovskite film deposition and crystallization, followed by rapid characterization to create a database (primarily building upon the SpinBot system we have purchased from SciPrios: https://www.sciprios.de/lab-automation/spincoating-robots/ ). The RF is also expected to execute optimization algorithms developed by the team to identify relevant regions of interest in the input parameter space. Python programming, database management and robotic interfacing (both with robots and electrical and mechanical equipment) is necessary for this job.

The work is critical in the goal of materials-by-design, especially considering sparse, yet well-labelled materials science datasets. The work performed here will continue to maintain NTU’s leadership in the space of AI for materials science, especially with digital discovery and data-driven learning being pioneering areas of research.

Key Responsibilities:

The Research Fellow is expected to work in the space of High-Throughput experimentation and automated robotics for synthesis, thin film deposition and electrical and opto-electronic characterization. Specifically, the RF is expected to work on the following areas of research:

CARES is leading a new project “Sustainable Manufacture of Molecules and Materials (SM3)”, funded by NRF CREATE programme within the Decarbonisation Grand Challenge. SM3 project is a collaboration with NTU, NUS, CARES & the University of Cambridge and EPFL. The broad aim of the project is to develop novel approaches and technologies for fully de-fossilised routes to complex functional molecules and molecular materials. The project will explore novel chemical transformations for conversion of net-zero feedstocks to building blocks typically used in pharma, agrochem and other end applications. The project will also explore novel synthetic methods for conversion of the building blocks into end-use functional molecules. Novel synthesis technologies (photoelectrochemistry, sonochemistry, mechanochemistry, etc), as well as advanced research methods (AI, chemoinformatics, high-throughput synthesis) and process metrics (LCA and technoeconomic analysis) are included in this large project.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking to fill a vacancy of a Research Fellow or a Senior Research Fellow with experience in techno-economics and object-oriented programming. The candidate would have experience in assessing engineering reports and scientific papers on novel synthesis technologies, extracting key process performance parameters. The successful candidate would also have experience in designing and performing simple experimental work in the broad area of process and reaction engineering.
