Overview of role

The Associate Scientist level is the entry level for individuals seeking to to utilise and grow their understanding of science/engineering to deliver innovation. Key Responsibilities

• Apply academic background, practical hands-on experience, and sound scientific method to generate and interpret data, solve problems, and make discoveries and connections against project needs and problem resolution.
• Develop a thorough understanding of the fundamental science and technology in their area and use hands-on, in the “lab” experimentation to deliver against the objectives of the project.
• Look for new ways to approach experimentation to meet project needs and enhance learning
• Develop skills and approaches consistent with a learning culture and “innovation through experimentation,” valuing and learning from both success and failure.
• Communicate results both orally and in writing to Manager/ technical coach and project team.
• Will spend a significant amount of time performing application work through hands-on experimentation and learning in the “lab”, thereby mastering fundamental methods, familiarizing themselves with our products, and demonstrating the critical thinking skills, technical understanding, and implementation skills to deliver their assignment.

Job Description

The Research Assistant will participate in seagrass research, with a specific focus on examining seagrass reproduction. A large component of the work is to be conducted in the field. The Research Assistant will lead and execute field sampling, laboratory analysis and some aquaria experimentation. Specific tasks include planning and conducting field work, running laboratory analyses, collection and analysis of data, and performing basic administrative duties.

This position reports to the Principle Investigator at Tropical Marine Science Institute and is based at St John Island National Marine Laboratory on offshore St John Island, Singapore. This position is for 1 year; after first year, renewal is subjected to performance review.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science, Environmental Science, or related field
• Proficient with basic Microsoft Suite
• Prior experience for marine and intertidal field work and seawater aquarium facilities is highly preferred.
• Must be willing to do intertidal field work, which entails working in muddy environment and working around low tide timings.
• Self-motivated, driven, and a keen interest in research
• Effective oral and written communication skills in English

A National Medical Research Council-funded Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the lab of Dr Rachel S Chong at the Singapore Eye Research Institute to study the effect of biomechanical deformations on microvascular cells in the eye. The focus of the lab is to identify the mechanisms that induce microvascular dysfunction in glaucoma and myopia - we are deeply committed to producing clinically impactful research that promotes meaningful collaboration between scientists and clinicians.

The job involves performing pre-clinical research using both in vitro and in vivo approaches to disease modelling, managing joint projects with local and overseas collaborators and supervising of junior research staff and students.
