Who we are looking for
Corporate Compliance is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable ESG Compliance Officer for APAC, Assistant Vice President, to oversee and ensure APAC compliance with Sustainability (Environmental, Social, and Governance) regulations regionally, including responsibility for testing and reporting of applicable laws, rules, regulatory guidance, and internal policy requirements. The ESG Compliance Officer will work with a global team, cross functionally, to monitor and keep pace with regulatory obligations, develop frameworks, policies, and procedures in alignment with regulatory obligations and the firm’s sustainability strategy as well as provide oversight of the first line of defense ESG related activities. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable of APAC ESG regulations, is a team player, and has the ability to navigate complex international regulatory landscapes while driving compliance excellence.
This role will be performed in hybrid model. We will consider applicants in Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokio and Sydney, although we may be open to extend our search to another State Street branches in APAC region.
Key responsibilities:
As ESG Compliance Officer for APAC, Assistant Vice President, you will:
- Support the development of a firm wide ESG compliance program, accounting for APAC ESG regulatory requirements, and manage the execution of monitoring and testing activities while providing insights on proportionate risk mitigation approaches in the implementation of ESG requirements.
- Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the firm’s ESG compliance framework, ensuring its alignment with the interpretations of applicable law, regulations, regulatory guidance, and industry standards through creating traceability and mapping documents.
- Implement an effective global ESG regulatory change management program that includes monitoring for new and amended ESG regulations, standards, and guidance from primary regulatory authorities in APAC, as well as working closely with business partners to update relevant controls and drive regulatory readiness.
- Conduct ESG compliance risk assessments and review and assess regulatory and compliance breaches and remediation.
- Ensure that all material residual ESG regulatory risks and issues together with remedial/mitigation actions are documented and, in collaboration with Country Compliance Heads, reported appropriately to senior management and relevant governance forums in a timely manner.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of ESG disclosures, metrics, risks, and other compliance requirements to demonstrate compliance with regulatory obligations and satisfy internal reporting requirements on the effectiveness of the ESG compliance program.
- Support ESG specific regulatory examinations, inquiries and prepare business leaders for reviews conducted by regulatory authorities, in collaboration with Country Compliance Heads.
- Educate compliance and business personnel on applicable ESG and sustainability-related laws, regulations, client mandates and firm policies.
- Prepare and present annual and periodic ESG Compliance program reports/reviews to satisfy client, regulator, and internal management requirements, including Compliance Program evaluations to support the State of Compliance Report.
- Participate in activities to enable successful ESG risk framework implementation including identifying data requirements, key risk indicators, key performance indicators, tools, and technology to support risk management and governance activities.
- Support the incorporation of ESG requirements in the assessment and evaluation of regulatory risks in product and services governance frameworks.
- Advise management on ESG obligations in relation to governance arrangements including the consideration of ESG objectives and goals within performance assessments, remuneration, and compensation arrangements.
- Keep pace with ESG data needs, provisions, and risks to ensure that disclosures and reporting routines meet regulatory expectations and industry best practices.
- Help define regulatory and reputational risks in relation to ESG obligations and guide risk owners across the publicly traded parent and its investment services and investment management businesses in the design, implementation and maintenance of risk-based impact and control-effectiveness assessments, integral to measuring residual risk and evaluating risk-appetite alignment.
- Provide guidance to internal stakeholders on ESG compliance and Sustainable business practices.
- Serve as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on ESG compliance.
- Develop ESG related training curriculums for employees and directors.
- Be a role model of risk management excellence.

Qualifications:
Knowledge/Education/Experience:
- Demonstrated regional experience with compliance risk management skills in financial services related to investment services and investment advisory.
- Ability to evaluate and interpret the law, regulations, and regulatory guidance.
- Experience in ESG data analysis, relevant platforms and reporting software.
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and corporate governance standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively globally with cross functional teams.
- 3+ years of experience in ESG, 3+ years in compliance risk management.
