Job Description:
Strategic
- Lead vision, strategy and roadmap planning of Data Science efforts across the group, that aligns with business & product priorities and also balances short term impact with long term strategic initiatives.
- Advocate for Data/AI/ML across the organization, contributing to the overall data strategy. Communicate the impact and potential of data science and ML to all stakeholders.
- Identify and translate product needs and business problems into data science problems.
- Embrace new technologies like GenAI, continuously learning, experimenting, and scaling them at work.
Operational
- Co-own organization goals and align data science team priorities to enable strategy & operations
- Collaborate effectively with product, design, engineering, analytics and business stakeholders to execute the data strategy and roadmap.
- Architect, develop, and deploy large-scale AI / ML solutions from prototype through production that meet key business requirements (conversion, pricing, recommendations, reliability, trust etc.)
- Establish operational and engineering excellence for data science products.
Leadership/Managerial
- Attract, coach and retain talented Data Scientists and ML engineers.
- Guide the team to prioritize work and set clear measurable goals at annual / quarter level.
- Take individual responsibility for solution discovery, design and overseeing execution of some strategically important and complex ML projects. Get your hands dirty when needed while providing strategic guidance to the team.
- Enable Carousell group level product development through data science models
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement through mentoring, feedback and metrics.

Functional Skills
- At least 10+ years of Data Science experience. A track record of shipping several large scale ML projects in the Consumer AI space using Deep Learning. A track record of building data science led products that solve customer pain points.
- At least 4+ years of people management experience managing a high performing data sciences team.
- Strong programming ability in Python & SQL and experience with common ML frameworks and libraries (e.g. TensorFlow, Keras, Spark MLlib, Sklearn), modern data processing and storage technologies, GenAI models/tools (e.g. GPT-X, Gemini etc).
- Strong ML fundamentals and understanding of ML best practices & common design patterns
- A keen product sense to develop, deploy and scale data science led products in the company.
- Experience in building ML models at scale, using real-time big data pipelines on platforms such as Spark/MapReduce
- Bachelor’s/Master’s/PhD degree, with strong academic record, in a related field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Math, Physics, Engineering, Finance or Economics. Solid foundation in mathematics and programming.
