Chapter Lead

Job purpose:

The chapter lead acts as the line manager of a chapter. Because the primary focus of a chapter can be professional or technical, the chapter lead can function as a business expert or engineer alongside his/her management role. When functioning as a business expert or engineer in a cell, the chapter lead does not act as the line manager or professional manager of the cell members.

The chapter lead is responsible for implementing standards and for development within his/her chapter. He/she promotes the future-readiness of the team members by creating the conditions to build and develop agile and specialised know-how and a digital mindset and ensuring the cross-chapter exchange of knowledge.

In the Cluster Supply Organisation, business specialists, business experts, engineer specialists, engineers, product owners and scrum masters work together as a team. The agile methods support the team members in performing their functions by facilitating a rapid and flexible response to changing conditions and customer needs through an iterative approach and the continual development of new solutions.

This approach is intended to bring about better products, higher quality, more efficient processes and higher implementation speeds. The team works together to ensure that valuable functionalities are provided to customers and that existing products, processes and services are developed and improved in line with customer needs.

To achieve this, the team members organise their own activities, working autonomously and with full accountability. To that end, they are granted responsibility for all processes and systems needed for the products, processes and services for which they are accountable. Open communications among the team members ensure regular and timely feedback. This enables the team to adopt a "fail faster" approach – i.e. the rapid recognition and correction of mistakes, which permits a quick reaction to changing conditions and customer needs by means of iterative procedures.


Management task

  • Line management of direct reports
  • Responsible for making available the necessary staff for the various cells, both in terms of quality and numbers, and ongoing coordination with the product owners with regard to their personnel requirements and the material work processes
  • Appropriate use of personnel management instruments
  • Active role model function for the agile methodology and a strong focus on customers and service
  • Ensuring and optimising productivity, efficiency and the quality of work within the chapter
  • Obligation to cooperate in cross-cluster management
  • Ensuring that future-ready professional and methodological training is provided in own area of responsibility; creating conditions for knowledge transfer; potentially willing to take on training projects, speaker functions and mentorships
  • Responsibility for ensuring workplace health and safety for all employees within own area of responsibility.
  • Support for young talents
  • Ensuring that team members in own area of responsibility meet compliance requirements at all times; strict compliance with regulatory training requirements; actively promoting awareness of compliance-related issues among the staff
  • Improvements to products, services, processes and/or systems must take into account the requirements of barrier-free IT access / software ergonomics in accordance with the objectives of the Commerzbank action plan "Inclusion".

Professional tasks

  • Alongside the manager function, the chapter lead performs the professional tasks associated with the functions of business expert or engineer depending on the chapter's activities.

Formal education:

  • University degree or
  • Commercial training (e.g. vocational training as a bank clerk), possibly supplemented by a Certificate in Banking Services and Operations ("Bankfachwirt"), supplemented by
  • additional specialised qualifications in the form of a dual degree programme (e.g. through a vocational academy/ university) completed parallel to vocational training or while working
  • Several years' work experience in various areas of the Bank or
  • Proof of appropriate qualifications and
  • Participation in the DC E

Specialist knowledge (work experience, further qualification):

Senior Engineer

Level 4

  • Responsibility for and proactive leadership of several operational interfaces; sharing of expert knowledge with colleagues and other (departments), including outside the cluster; person performing the function acts as mentor
  • Organising, coordinating and steering professional activities, taking into account commercial, efficiency and
  • quality aspects; taking initiative in the steering of cross-functional activities – also outside own area of expertise if appropriate
  • Design and management of the ongoing development of a large number of new and innovative products / services / systems / processes to initiate, implement and optimise future-ready digital structures to be deployed uniformly throughout the Bank
  • Ensuring the implementation of regulatory requirements and policies, also taking cross-segment concerns into account
  • Efficiency and quality awareness with regard to multi-dimensional tasks, with due consideration for security, proper procedures and risk; setting timeframes and deadlines
  • Responsibility for costs/revenues/profitability/quality identification and mitigation of risks and guidance of colleagues
  • Early recognition of impending problems; gaining an understanding of overall context and consequences above and beyond the urgent problem; development of new and innovative problem-solving approaches. The developed solutions can serve as templates for standards processes.
  • Identifying consequences of the market analysis and ensuring that action is taken; deciding on final pricing structure; defining standards and requirements
  • Development of short to long-term strategies, including forecasting of necessary resources
