Job Summary
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated School Counsellor for our school! The identified School Counsellor will provide a high-quality therapeutic service, providing counselling, support, guidance and advice to students of the school, experiencing a wide range of emotional difficulties, whilst ensuring that safeguarding and the welfare and care of all is promoted.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- To provide a confidential, therapeutic service to our young people, at a highly specialist level, for a range of issues including learning problems, difficulties with peers, behavioural difficulties in the classroom, and emotional issues which may arise as a result of traumatic experiences;
- To liaise effectively with families of young people, including parents and carers, as part of the assessment and intervention;
- To engage in multi-disciplinary working with the wider Inclusion team, attending weekly Inclusion meetings, and weekly peer supervision with the Lead Counsellor;
- To be responsible for maintaining appropriate and confidential records, keeping suitable case accounts on each session securely, in accordance with GDPR and the School’s Data Protection Policy;
- To uphold confidentiality in line with the legal (common law and statutory) duty of confidentiality to young people;
- To liaise closely with internal stakeholders including the Lead School Counsellor, Designated Safeguarding Lead, Senior Leaders including Leadership Group, SENCO and others, as necessary;
- To ensure that concerns or information about a student, that should be known by other staff, is appropriately logged and passed to the Designated Safeguarding Lead;
- To liaise with external professionals, such as GPs, and CAMHS, as necessary, attending multi- agency meetings, where appropriate;
- To process, follow up and collate all reports, reflections from students, on incidents and recommend to the principal consequences give by the Leadership team.
- To maintain a log of incidents and outcomes.

- To keep abreast of current issues in Mental health provision, in relation to young people and continually reviewing and evaluating the service, arranging and delivering relevant training for staff as and when needs are identified;
- To actively promote the service to young people in our care, their parents/carers and staff, in order to provide and regularly update information for stakeholders about the service;
- To facilitate group sessions on issues, which may include, for example, conflict resolution, anger management and self-esteem;
- To provide regular audit information such as statistics, characteristics and types of issues and needs in order to inform future training needs and professional development.
- To continually review and evaluate the service;
- To undertake additional duties and responsibilities, as reasonable.
Knowledge and experience
- Minimum two years’ of counselling experience
- Appropriate degree, relating to the field of work for School Counsellor
- Evidence of relevant and challenging continuing professional development related to Counsellor field of work
- An understanding of the developmental, emotional, social and educational issues of children and young people
- An awareness of the range of needs of people from diverse ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds
- Knowledge of relevant legislation pertaining to the safeguarding of children.
