Public Relations Manager

About the role

The Public Relations Manager is responsible for driving the public relations function of the university, contributing to the overall communications and marketing effort to strengthen our communications infrastructure to protect and enhance our university’s reputation, market positioning and growth.

What you will be doing

Key Responsibilities:

• Work closely with the Head of Communications to drive the public relations and media engagement strategy to support the university’s strategic brand-building efforts.
• Oversee the ongoing development and refinement of the university’s corporate narrative and key messages.
• Develop timely media materials, including speeches, media kits and media releases as required and collaborate with colleagues from the department to proactively amplify the university’s key messages and initiatives across communication channels.
• Act as the primary contact person for engaging the media, manage and cultivate media relationships to land prominent placements and identify opportunities to pitch new ideas to raise SUSS’ brand visibility and reputation.
• Assist in the ideation, scoping and copyediting of faculty commentaries and facilitate the pitching and submission of commentaries to media outlets.
• Provide PR resources and strategic counsel for key internal stakeholders’ media outreach efforts.
• Develop the PR skills and capacity of SUSS through spokesperson media training and workshops for the general education of SUSS staff.
• Track and manage the PR budget to ensure optimised usage and collaborate closely with strategic PR agency partners to support media outreach, intelligence gathering and analysis efforts.
• Provide counsel and communications support in inter-departmental collaborations when required.
• Participate in and support university-wide events when required.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related disciplines.
• 5-7 years of experience in corporate communications, public or media relations, or in the media industry, with a passion for communications as a career.
• Excellent verbal and writing skills in English with editorial flair and strong creative judgement. Proficiency in the Chinese language would be advantageous but not essential.
• Strong project and time management skills to handle various projects simultaneously, with agility to manage tight timelines due to media enquiries/crisis situations.
• Solid understanding of social media and new digital platforms that impact communications strategies and PR trends.
• Meticulous and self-initiated team player who can work independently and is motivated to learn.
