As an Asian Energy Analyst, you possess a comprehensive understanding of the supply and demand dynamics in major Asian power markets. Your expertise encompasses power demand drivers and detailed insights into both conventional and renewable power generation. You will constantly monitor and assess news and regulations related to the Asian power industry, evaluating their impacts through economic considerations and power stack modeling.
Your timely and high-quality analyses enhance our existing analytical framework on Asian power markets and contribute directly to our trading decisions. You regularly communicate findings to traders and our analyst team, optimizing results and identifying opportunities for improvements.
In particular, your responsibilities include:
- Conducting in-depth analyses of supply (e.g., conventional and renewable generation) and demand factors (e.g., demand growth and load shape), while building and maintaining fuel stack models to understand marginal power prices and fuel-switching dynamics.
- Collecting data on existing and future supply-demand balances for power markets in China, South Korea, Australia, and Japan.
- Monitoring news flows and regulatory policy changes, and analyzing their impacts on the power and fuel markets.
- Sourcing data from various sources and formats, and collaborating with the market data team to ensure accurate integration into our processes.
- Demonstrating expertise in programming, a thorough understanding of the data processing pipeline, and the ability to implement automated solutions to optimize data handling and analysis tasks.
- Applying advanced modeling techniques and data science methodologies to analyze large datasets, develop predictive models, optimize trading strategies, enhance analytical accuracy, and support data-driven decision-making.
- Proactively sharing analysis-backed insights and presenting findings and results in a clear and visually compelling format using data visualization tools.
Competencies/Skills Required:
- Working knowledge of one or more Asian power markets (China, Japan, South Korea, Australia) and other commodities in the energy sector (e.g., coal, gas).
- Relevant experience in fundamental modeling within an energy trading environment utilizing expert software for energy market modeling and simulation (e.g. PLEXOS).
- A university degree in Economics, Finance, Energy, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
- Experience working with large datasets and interfacing with databases.
- Strong economic understanding combined with robust quantitative and analytical skills,
- Proven expertise in programming and model development to deliver high-quality analyses and develop well-structured code that enhances analytical and trading activities (e.g., Python, R, SQL).
- Excellent IT skills in the MS Windows environment.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to transfer knowledge between analysis and trading with an interdisciplinary approach.
- Language skills: fluent in English; proficiency in Mandarin, Japanese, or Korean is advantageous.
- Strong team player with a high level of self-motivation and flexibility, capable of working in a trading environment and meeting tight deadlines.
