Chartering Manager (Dry Bulk)

This role entails full responsibility for overseeing all chartering activities for bulk vessels chartered in and cargoes booked by the company. The Chartering Manager will maintain an updated system for visibility on all chartering operations. They will maintain continuous communication with charterers, owners, trading houses, and brokers, providing regular updates to the Chartering Director on vessel positions, market trends, and freight analysis. The role includes implementing and refining best practice methods and preparing board reports as needed.


Essential Duties

• Manage chartering activities for both owned and chartered tonnage.

• Identify and develop new business opportunities related to cargo contracts and vessel tonnage.

• Utilize market intelligence and industry insights to make informed decisions.

• Analyse market trends, freight rates, and cargo demand to guide chartering strategies.

• Negotiate and finalize charter parties with charterers, owners, operators, and brokers.

• Ensure charter party details are accurately communicated to post-fixtures and masters.

• Manage charter contracts effectively, adhering to all legal and operational guidelines.

• Measure and report on the performance of third-party service providers.

• Prepare and manage hire statements and invoices, including freight, demurrage, and dispatch claims using company software.

• Report fixture results and perform voyage accounting, including variance analysis against charter party estimates.

• Optimize vessel allocation and performance through regular assessments.

• Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and best practices in the chartering domain.

• Develop and maintain chartering and operational procedures.

• Support the development of a safety and excellence culture within the team.

• Create comprehensive voyage plans and estimates.

• Work closely with Technical Managers to maximize the tradable days of the fleet.

• Network and engage with key stakeholders to enhance the business profile.

• Correspond with P&I Clubs and manage claims through arbitration if necessary.

• Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key industry stakeholders.

• Collaborate closely with the operations and commercial teams to ensure seamless charter execution.

Job Requirements

• A university degree in maritime studies, business, or a related field.

• At least 5 years of experience in dry bulk chartering, with a proven track record in a similar position.

• Comprehensive knowledge of shipping cargoes, related laws, and regulations.

• Established network within the shipping industry.

• Proficiency in using chartering software, with existing knowledge of IMOS software being a plus.

• Fluent in English, with excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

• Strong negotiator with the ability to outperform market levels, a team player who meets deadlines, and the ability to work effectively under pressure and solve problems proactively.
