The Role
The Chief Officer is responsible for managing the deck department, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the ship’s operations, and supervising the ship’s crew. This role involves significant responsibility for cargo operations, navigation, and compliance with international maritime regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
● Oversee the daily operations of the deck crew and manage deck maintenance.
● Ensure the vessel is maintained in a seaworthy condition.
● Supervise loading, unloading, and stowage of cargo.
● Manage the vessel’s safety equipment and ensure its readiness.
● Assist in the planning and execution of the ship’s voyage.
● Supervise the watchkeeping duties and ensure compliance with the navigational regulations.
● Conduct regular checks and audits to ensure adherence to safety and navigational procedures.
● Ensure the vessel complies with international maritime regulations, including SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) and MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships).
● Conduct safety drills and training for the crew.
● Maintain accurate records and documentation related to safety and compliance.
● Supervise, train, and mentor the deck crew.
● Allocate tasks and ensure efficient use of crew resources.
● Handle disciplinary actions and resolve crew-related issues.
● Act as a liaison between the Master and the deck crew.
● Communicate effectively with other departments on board and with shore-based personnel.
● Lead emergency response efforts in case of incidents such as fire, flooding, or man overboard.
● Ensure the crew is well-prepared for emergencies and that emergency procedures are followed.
The ideal candidate should preferably:
● Posses a valid certificate.
● Possess at least 5 years of experience as a Chief Mate onboard a dredger vessel.
