Technical Manager, Shipping Contracts Management

Vale International Sa Singapore Branch

This role is responsible for providing strategies and securing mid-long term maritime transportation capacity for Vale’s CFR sales to customers and/or imports for Vale’s projects to ensure that all vessels are safely operated at the most efficient and cost-effective freight. Additionally, the scope involves project management to enhance the fleet into new technologies and fuel transition.


Main Responsibilities

  • Support the long-term shipping strategies for Vale by leading tenders and negotiating long term contracts to mitigate Vale’s exposure to spot market volatility and ensuring transport capacity for Vale’s CFR cargoes.
  • Lead the Shipping Contracts desk, guarantee the fulfillment of the contractual terms agreed with the counter parties.
  • Develop and implement standardized procedures, practices and processes to improve long term contracts administration, contracting and spot chartering to ensure compliance with Vale’s norms and policies.
  • Build and manage relationships with key personnel from third-party suppliers of tonnage.
  • Responsible for presentations and reports to Vale top management.
  • Establish and monitor Key Performance Indicators to guarantee the performance of shipowners and service providers.
  • Ensure the adequacy and compatibility of Vale contracts in accordance with shipping regulations, recommend and implement commercial solutions to adapt Vale’s contracts to new regulations and technologies (e.g. SOX, GHG, etc)
  • Provide assistance arising from with potential litigations of shipping contracts.
  • Develop new trades under the direction of the iron ore sales and marketing teams
  • Monitor the freight market to support decision making.
  • Assess opportunities for improvement of the freight portfolio.
  • Provide shipping and operations expertise to the other departments within Vale.
  • Represent Vale Shipping in executive meetings and events in Asia.
  • Perform chartering activities on an ad-hoc basis during peaks in demand.

Requirements

  • Degree in maritime studies, logistics, economics or other relevant disciplines.
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant experience in Mining and Shipping. Experience in Ship Operations, Chartering, Scheduling and Iron Ore supply chain is highly preferred.
  • Expert on voyage calculation methods.
  • Sound knowledge of shipping systems: IMOS, Signal Ocean, SEA/fix
  • Strong project management, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Good understanding of the commodity markets (especially iron ore).
  • Solid understanding of long-term freight contracts and spot chartering business.
  • Able to lead and develop the team.
  • Knowledge of Power BI is advantageous.
  • Fluency in Portuguese to liaise with Headquarters and overseas counter parts.
