About
Access to water is a key development challenge in large parts of rural Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
It is manifested through two pathways including access to water for irrigation, and for drinking
water and sanitation. Elsewhere in south and southeast Asia, intensive use of groundwater has
fueled growth in agricultural productivity, food security and for meeting rural drinking water
demands. Access to affordable and reliable pumping energy remains a critical bottleneck in
accessing groundwater despite the presence of plentiful amounts of the resource in SSA. The
proposed study will bring together biophysical and socioeconomic data to estimate the need for
and availability of groundwater at a granular level across SSA.
