Research Scientist (Adaptive Robotics and Mechatronics (ARM) Group), SIMTech

A*star Research Entities

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a motivated individual to fill the position of a research scientist in the high-performance actuation section of the group. You will be in-charge of the development of next generation light weight and energy efficient actuation modules required in robotics and automation systems as well as electromobility applications. In this role, you will be expected to take charge of performing the multi-physics modelling and simulation of various actuator design concepts based on first principle models with the aid of software tools. This would be necessary to provide the project team with clear guidelines on the design, topology, material selection, etc. to achieve the desired performance characteristics. The ability to model and analyze the actuator dynamics under the various operational scenario (with hardware-in-the loop testing) would also be a necessary part of the development process. In addition, good working knowledge of digital control methods and power conversion systems is required in order to achieve the real-time control of the actuator under development.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • The design and development of energy efficient electrically actuated modules and motion systems
  • Electromagnetic and thermomechanical analysis of the actuator under development
  • Modelling and simulating the electro-mechanical characteristics of actuator under development
  • Application of model-based, data driven modelling, optimization and machine learning techniques to the design methodology
  • CAD Design, fabrication, testing and verification of prototype performance against design specifications
  • Testing of the actuator under development with suitable controller, drive electronics and power systems
  • Integration of the actuation modules into robotics and mechatronics systems e.g. mobile robot
  • Assist with the gathering of technology intelligence in the state of the art actuation technologies
  • Collaborate with others from the team to support research grant applications
  • Work in multi-disciplinary teams to generate high impact research outcome and innovative solutions to industrial used cases

JOB REQUIREMENT

  • Ph.D./Master"s degree in Electrical/ Mechanical/ Mechatronics Engineering, preferably with specialization in Mechatronics Engineering
  • 2-3 years of work experience or similar is preferred

We value the following skills:

  • Up to date with state-of-the-art actuation technologies
  • Good understanding of electromagnetic actuator design principles
  • Competent in numerical simulation software tools e.g. Ansys maxwell, Comsol Multiphysics, JMAG
  • Good working knowledge of magnetic materials suited for application in electrical machines
  • Familiar with assembly and manufacturing of actuator components e.g. frameless motor assembly
  • Hands-on experience in implementing digital control of motion systems e.g. embedded control system
  • Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop test equipment and software e.g. speedgoat, DSP, simulink
  • Experience with the design and implementation of BLDC and/or PMSM motors is preferred
  • Experienced with AC and DC drive electronics and control of electric machines is a plus
  • Good knowledge of commercially available integrated electrically actuated motion control systems
  • Good communications skills and the ability to work in a team
