RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Infrastructure Management
    • Architect, design, and implement cloud-based solutions that align with both business objectives and technical requirements.
    • Collaborate with development and operations teams to seamlessly integrate cloud solutions.
    • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies to automate and streamline the deployment and management of cloud resources.
    • Continuously optimize cloud infrastructure for performance and cost-efficiency.
    • Monitor and analyze cloud performance, making proactive adjustments as needed.
    • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams on cloud architecture and best practices.
    • Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in cloud computing.
    • Recommend appropriate cloud services based on project requirements.
    • Ensure compliance with security standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices in cloud security.
    • Conduct regular security audits and assessments.
    • Manage vendor relationships with cloud service providers and technology vendors, stay updated with vendor offerings, and negotiate contracts.
    • Act as a subject matter expert on cloud architecture, participate in technical discussions, and provide guidance to stakeholders.
    • Provide mentorship, training, and hands-on support to help teams develop necessary skills and expertise.
    • Plan, implement, and maintain SMU's enterprise and research infrastructure (HPC), including private and public cloud computing, as well as all relevant research hardware to meet SMU's diverse research computing needs.
    • Plan, formulate, and architect the growth of research infrastructure (HPC) to cater to the needs of SMU researchers, enhancing faculty productivity in research.
    • Develop, maintain, and execute system operation procedures (e.g., IT Disaster Recovery) to improve service availability, reliability, and redundancy.
  • Consultancy and Support
    • Engage business units to understand their business goals, technical requirements, and existing infrastructure.
    • Tailored cloud solutions based on business requirements that address scalability, reliability, security, and cost-effectiveness.
    • Assist business units in implementing cloud solutions by providing guidance and support throughout the deployment process.
    • Troubleshoot issues, resolve technical challenges, and provide ongoing support after post-implementation.
    • Conduct induction courses to raise awareness of the cloud computing and research platforms to the SMU community.
    • Prepare presentations, documentation, and user's guide for users of cloud computing services and HPCC.
  • Projects
    • Manage IT projects for existing system enhancement and new system implementation.
    • Establish project plans, milestones, and deliverables.
    • Monitor project progress and review project performance against key metrics.
    • Maintain a risk tracker and mitigation plan.
    • Provide status updates and reports on project progress.
    • Provide leadership and motivation to the project team.
    • Manage expectations and address concerns proactively.
    • Ensure the project is kept within the project scope, budget, and timeline.
    • Maintain comprehensive project documentation throughout the project life cycle.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Diploma / Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics/Electrical Engineering or related disciplines from a recognized university.
  • Candidates with relevant certification in Cloud Computing (e.g. AWS, Azure), Terraform, and Linux will be highly advantageous.
  • At least 5 years of Infrastructure experience with at least 3 years of Cloud architectural design experience.
  • Experience and expertise working with Microsoft Azure and AWS experience would be desirable.
  • Understanding of cloud computing concepts, architectures, and service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
  • Proficiency in cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, including their services and features.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, VPN, and routing in cloud environments.
  • Understanding of cloud security principles, encryption, identity, and access management (IAM), and compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with DevOps methodologies, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and automation tools.
  • Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker and container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes.
  • Experience with infrastructure provisioning and management tools like Terraform and CloudFormation.
  • Understanding of cloud-based data storage solutions, databases, and data analytics platforms.
  • Familiarity with cloud monitoring, logging, and alerting tools to ensure the performance and reliability of cloud environments.
  • Knowledge of governance frameworks, regulatory requirements, and best practices for cloud governance.
  • Good technical, analytical, and troubleshooting skills and confidence in providing frontline consultation and expertise applied across the many academic disciplines/areas.
  • Excellent command of written and oral communication skills. Attention to detail and sound decision-making abilities.
  • Good interpersonal and customer servicing skills.
  • Enthusiastic and motivated team player.
  • Independent, proactive, positive attitude, and a keen interest in exploring the areas of emerging cloud technologies.
