What is a Server Administrator?
The role of a server administrator can be defined as someone who has the knowledge and skills to manage and handle operating system level development work both within a single machine or a cluster of machines. S/he will also be entrusted to oversee the seamlessness of such a setup in terms of operational readiness.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Handle Windows Server operating systems across multiple machines in terms of upkeeping system performance, troubleshooting issues and bug fixing
- Work closely with the project team on operating system maintenance procedures including but not limiting to routine maintenance, preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance
- Tend to users’ issues with the operating system in a timely manner, handle such stakeholder communications till issue resolution
- Apply patches, updates, security configurations such as hotfixes
- Implement and manage backup files and ensure that such backup files are suitable for restoration operations
- Leverage on your knowledge of Windows Operating Systems to work on operating system upgrades
- Maintaining technical documentation for maintenance-related work
- Embark on any other tasks as assigned by the Project Manager
Skills Required:
A successful windows server administrator will develop a multitude of skill sets including but not limiting to technical, problem-solving and stakeholder management skills. A background in Information Communications and Technology, Business Information Systems or equivalent can serve as a solid foundation to build your career as a server administrator.
- Familiarity with PowerShell scripting skills
- Experience in handling Windows operating systems
- Knowledge of troubleshooting operating systems
- Prior experience with Windows Server (Datacenter, Standard or Essentials) is a major advantage
- Knowledge of at least one hypervisor technology is advantageous (e.g. Hyper-V, VMWare EXSi, Oracle VirtualBox)
- Knowledge of Azure Cloud is a plus
- Adept at queries with good communication and stakeholder management skills
