Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and support to school leaders on various legal matters, including contract review, employment issues, student matters, board governance matters, and compliance with government policy.
- Assist in the development and implementation of school policies and procedures to ensure best practice, fairness, and compliance with local and international laws and regulations.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts, agreements, and other legal documents, including but not limited to those related to vendors, service providers, and partnerships, collaborating with external counsel where appropriate.
- Oversee the school's compliance programs, ensuring adherence to applicable legal requirements, regulations, and internal policies.
- Manage and resolve legal disputes involving the school, including coordinating with external legal counsel when necessary.
- Advise on employment matters, including contracts, policies, and disputes involving members of the school community.
- Assume the duties of the Board Secretary at such time when they step down from their current role, including administration of board elections, providing advice on board rules and procedures, advising the board nominations and governance committee, and helping coordinate board agendas.
- Advise on any legal issues related to student conduct and student safeguarding
- Collaborate with various departments and school divisions to assess legal risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
- Conduct training sessions on legal topics relevant to the school environment as needed.
- Create a communication plan to ensure that key legal and regulatory changes and compliance matters are shared with SAS educators in a timely manner with the systems and support structures to implement any needed changes.
- Stay informed about changes in legal requirements and regulations both domestically and internationally.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Position Requirements and Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or equivalent from an accredited law school and active Bar membership in good standing.
- At least 8 of legal experience, preferably in a law firm or in-house setting, working with senior-level executives.
- Experience in dealing with wide range of legal issues with a high level of legal judgment and problem-solving skills
- Ability to devise and implement complex and well-thought-out policies
- Familiarity with Singapore laws and regulations.
- Experience in managing legal disputes and working with external counsel when necessary.
- Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently whilst being a strong team player.
- Ability to lead projects and task forces.
- An understanding of or experience working with education institutions and experience in matters of board governance would be beneficial, but not a requirement.
