Dulwich College (Singapore) is looking to recruit a Strings Assistant (Maternity Cover) to cover a period of maternity leave from Early November 2024 to Early February 2025.

Candidates should have a genuine commitment to child initiated and active learning, putting children first and ensuring that they are challenged as individuals. Recent experience of an inquiry, concept-based approach to curriculum planning is preferable.

In addition to the responsibilities of a Dulwich College teacher, the post holder will be expected to work with the Head of Junior and Senior Schools. They will:

  • Be able to play a bowed string instrument (violin/viola/cello) to a high standard.
  • Support the Lead Strings Teacher with tuning violins/violas/cellos at the start of the lessons.
  • Support the Teacher and help individual children with their string technique and note reading skills throughout the lessons.
  • Be able to lead and work independently with small groups of children to develop their string technique.
  • Be able to coach small string chamber music groups of more advanced musicians in the Junior School.
  • To help maintain the Colleges string instrument stock and change strings when required.
  • Help organise and distribute books and ensemble music required for the strings programme.

All other duties commensurate with the role.

Along with the requirements of a Dulwich College teacher, the post holder will:

  • Be organised, prepared, efficient, independent, goal and target driven, perceptive, and have a can-do attitude.
  • Have the clear ability to meet deadlines ahead of schedule, and collaborate in a calm, controlled, considered, and measured approach;
  • Have a collegial approach with colleagues across the College and in particular in the Music Department;
  • Have a strong background in string pedagogy;
  • Have experience teaching beginners in a mixed ability classroom;
  • Have a willingness to teach whole class string pedagogy.
