Project Title: Revealing the characteristics of the storm that caused the 2021 Malay Peninsula Flood and its outlook in the future
Project Introduction: The 2021-2022 Malaysian Floods brought severe casualties and economic loss, during which 50 people were reported dead or missing with a total of 125,000 people displaced. Understand the evolution of the precipitation process and the storm-hatching environment is the key to improve the short-term forecast and long-term outlook of such extreme event. By employing a state-of-the-art storm tracking algorithm, the proposal aims to 1) reconstruct the trajectory of the storms that brought the torrential rainfall over the peninsula; 2) explore the key meteorological drivers that are most conductive to the triggering, initiation, development, and dissipation processes of the flood-causing storm, and 3) estimate the coincidence probability of such key drivers through their independent occurrence frequency extracted from their respective historical records.
